The Incredible Hulk #601 (2009) – The Review

The Incredible Hulk #601

The Incredible Hulk #601

So, the Hulk is gone – Banner’s on his own – out to find his son.  But there is good news – Pak is back!  Now, this issue starts with Banner on a train where a young boy is abused by his father.  When Banner steps in the man hits him – and what normally would’ve ended with the entire city in rubble – ends with Banner instead threatening the man by letting him know he has all his information (taken off of his cell phone) and if he ever hits the kid again he’ll destroy him.  When Bruce reaches his stop he’s greeted by the FF, Cap, Spidey Hercules, Wolverine, and others.  Banner jokes by asking if he’s getting the key to the city – Reed quips back with “Sorry, you didn’t exactly endear yourself to the locals the last time you hit town.”  they trade a few more barbs before entering the Baxter Building.

Reed tries to inform Banner of everything he knows about Skaar – but Banner knows everything already – and then a spaceship comes flying out of Bruce’s nose.  No, I’m not kidding.  A spaceship.  Out of his nose.  The ship contains Pym, Beast, Black Panther and Cho.  They’ve been studying Bruce form the inside and have found no traces of Gamma-Radiation.  No sign of the Hulk at all.  Banner knows all of this as well – but tells them all that he knows the Hulk will be back.  No matter what – he will be back – and he wants to be ready for it.  Before Reed can ask more, Bruce grabs the Hulk’s sword and says he just wanted his stuff back, and teleports out of there.

Bruce goes to the Mojave Desert and gets ready for Skaar.  A large shadowy Hulk-ing figure appears – Skaar leaps across the country only to find that it is not the Hulk.  Instead Bruce has climbed inside the red robot from TTA #60/61 – (Thanks for the note Mark P) and it feeds off of Skaar’s Gamma energy.  Skaar switches to his Old Strong power and beats the robot pretty quickly.

Skaar continues to try to beat Bannner down – but Banner uses shields to block Skaar’s blows.  Skaar finally calms down enough to listen to Bruce – who tells him that he knows he wants a chance to kill the Hulk – and the Hulk wants the same.  The Hulk is just as angry because Skaar killed his mother, the Hulk’s queen, all over again.  He destroyed Sakaar – and he will beat Skaar.  But Bruce wants him to be ready when the Hulk comes back – so he tells him he’s going to help by picking a fight.  Then, we see a blast hit an RV and it reveals Juggernaut sitting in his easy chair – and a little pissed off.  Get ready for a fight – a good one!

Alright, do you see how a build up is necessary to make a fight not only make sense but also seem real exciting?  I’m excited for the next issue!  I want to see Skaar take on Juggy – but it makes it better because it wasn’t just a random fight.  It wasn’t out of left field and all of a sudden!  I liked the fact that they are showing just how smart Bruce is – I love when writers don’t forget that Bruce is one of the 8 smartest people on the face of the earth – that Bruce is no slouch and can take care of himself!  And Skaar looks bad-ass!  He is certainly an entertaining character to watch – even while we’re waiting for the Hulk to come back!  The issue gets a B+ from me.  I liked it a lot and am eagerly awaiting the next issue.  What did you guys think?

  1. Funny, how we were just talking about this red robot not too long ago. The original user was never found and his identification still a mystery? Banner just makes a new one or had one in hiding.

  2. Actually, you aren’t thinking about the grand scheme of things. Cain Marko IS Rulk. There’s far too many examples of that. I.E. Cain told Xavier to not come looking for him, for Xavier will not like what he finds (World War Hulk: X-Men). And Juggernaut appeared in FIRE when he was fighting the Hulk (WWH: X-Men). And when the Lady Liberators went to hunt Rulk they found him in a BAR which was TRASHED (Hulk vol. 2). Classic Cain Marko if you follow him like I do. Now, I realize Marko has been seen by us, the readers, on three seperate occassions since the battle with him and Hulk during “WWH: X-Men” BUT Marvel is trying to throw the readers off. I strongly feel that Cain Marko is Rulk. Oh, and Nightside is the red She-Hulk too (“Shrulk”).
Notice the resemblance? see attached: http://www.robertweinberg.net/gifs/comics/nside3s.jpg

    • Wow – you really think the Juggernaught is the Red Hulk? Sorry – but that wouldn’t be a big enough pay-off for Hulk fans – you have to think Hulk universe – and Juggernaught was at the end of this issue – as Juggernaught – sorry but Juggy makes no sense what-so-ever. I mean, seriously, that would turn out to be one of the worst reveals in MU…

All I know is that if it’s anyone but Ross then Loeb is hackier than I thought with all the hints he’s dropped – such as calling Banner “Milksop” – which Juggy has never done. Biggest reason right there that Juggy IS NOT Red Hulk.

      • Dear Gen Spook X – realize that this isn’t a public forum – if you want to get your comments posted on here then try to have a little more decorum. Spouting off the way you have in the 2 comments I have deleted isn’t going to get you on here – questioning the loyalty of a Hulk fan simply because he knows garbage when he reads it isn’t conducive to anything. Just because there are plenty of Hulk fans outraged at the current storyline doesn’t make them any less a Hulk fan – and just because you like it doesn’t make you anymore of a Hulk fan.

So it remains – Loeb sucks at writing the Hulk comic – plenty people agree – there are fans of it – but in my experience with them, they aren’t Hulk fans, and if they are then they like it for some ridiculous reason like “I like the savage Hulk persona” – yeah, well so do I but I want the stories to have a little more substance.

I will answer some of your questions though – I buy the comic out of loyalty – that’s really it. But if you’ve read my latest review I liked 14 more than any of the other drivel Loeb had sold so far. No, I don’t think Juggy is the Red Hulk and think it’s a silly notion that makes very little sense – no offense D0K70R – but there is no way Juggs is the Red Hulk. Finally, like I said before – you want to post things on this site then have a little class when you post – this isn’t a public forum – and even though there are others who have posted here with differing views they have done so in a very approachable way that incites discussion – not in a way that insults the people who want an intelligent story from the Hulk.

      • That is A LOt of words!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Very good issue. It’s nice to have Pak back in the driving seat of this series… with all the restarts and renumbering it makes it very difficult to figure out if this is a new series or a continuation of the title that Herc took over (gah! too confusing!!).

I too am very excited that they are utilizing Bruce’s intelligence. Banner makes up an essential part of the Marvel egg-head set and it’s great to see him taking that place in a new way, playing a long term strategy to take down the Hulk when he inevitably returns.

As far as Deadpool I was in the dark on this character’s appeal until I read the new series by Daniel Way and became a fan. Pick up the two most recent issues and you’ll probably laugh your ass off. Ingenious stuff and Way somehow writes the gritty as all get out Wolverine Origins as well. Weird.

I am concerned about the whole ranking of intelligent guys in the MU. I think it started with Cho as the 7th smartest person but does every big brain have to be assigned a number? Are they going to square off on some crazy soduku contest or something?

And what did you think of the She-Hulk back-up?

  4. King Hulk Marco

There is a point, you never mentioned the She-Hulk backup story or te fact that General John Ryker is back with a new Gamma Corps. That is time made up of women.

The artwork is (pardon the pun) incredible!

    • I will have to go back and write the review for that one – I was trying to get the others posted – but I did see Ryker is back which shoots down another possible suspect – although, they have all been shot down to me – it’s Ross for sure…

  5. King Hulk Marco

I have agree to with you on that one, unless Marvel make Red Hulk someone totally left field hhmmmmm ……………..

  6. King Hulk Marco

I still wouldn’t rule Ryker out as Rulk though. Remember, the only thing for sure, is nothing is for sure. Though that possibilty is now slim. Ryker is connected to the gamma soldier program of MODOK & AIM somehow, somewhere. Remember the Gamma Corp’s first mission was to kill Flux who was being experimented by (drumroll please) AIM.

  7. I like bad ass Banner. Skaar’s cool. Still hate Rulk. I guess it will all be worth reading the results of this past year of crap. Definitely not buy the Rulk’s title though. Red robot/ Rulk gamma draining is offensive. Juggernaut’s reaction is priceless.

  8. Well, I recant what I said. And I did some research. General Thunderbolt Ross is Rulk. I should’ve known that after reading #600. The way that he talked was like an LMD. Plus the first person Rulk killed was Abomination (Blonsky). Abomination killed Betty Ross-Banner by secretly poisoning her with his radioactive blood. When do they plan on revealing Rulk’s identity? I heard a rumor that it was going to happen between #14-#17 (vol. 4). Let’s hope it’s not Mikey Mouse.
