Imagine my surprise this week, when reading The Life Fantastic TPB, when I came across a juicy little nugget of Hulk geekdom!  So, If you don’t know what the story is about here it is in a nutshell.  The Hulk (who is green when the story begins) is used to find out what kind of shenanigans Hydra is up to – but when he goes deep into a cave he finds a Gamma Bomb.  And then it explodes – leaving the Hulk a savage, grey incarnation who is reliving the Hulks life – each painful moment to the next the Hulk smashes his way through each hallucination.  The Thing and Johnny are sent to take the Hulk down.  The Thing realizes that the Hulk isn’t himself and that some thing’s wrong.

Ultimately, the Hulk is about to land the killing blow to the Thing, Johnny goes nova.  This doesn’t take the Hulk down – but it snaps him out of it.  As the story ends Grimm says that he talked to Reed – and look what he says:

Hulk Mask 016

The whole idea came from the Thing!  Wow!  This was released at the same time as Prelude to Planet Hulk – how great is that?

  1. Well I’ll be gamma bombed…! That is the FIRST time I have ever heard about that connection…! Nice sleuthing…I’m gonna have to track down that issue to front end the entire saga now.

  2. You guys should hang more on comic forums..lolll…When reading the whole Planet Hulk saga, one must start with those FF issues (# 533-535), then comes the new Avengers Illuminati special(Absolute Must read) after that you are set to start with the Prelude to Planet Hulk and Planet Hulk series.

  3. Aww snap and all that time I thought Thing was the only good guy left in that series. Turns out he was the Evil Mastermind all along.

  4. Yeah, I believe this is a MUST read to get the entire Planet Hulk experience. And, as mentioned above, the Illuminati special is a must, too. It actually contains some things that, at first read, you think are editorial errors, until you realize that it is truly genius storytelling–but you wouldn’t know that unless you read those two FF issues!
Pretty high-end showings for the Hulk in those two issues, too: Takes everything Johnny has and walks right through it, takes a gamma bomb to the face–which only makes him madder, and almost kills Ben. And all this *before* Planet Hulk and his “power up”, so to speak, going into World War Hulk. Good stuff.
