The Incredible Hulks #614 (2010) – The Review

Incredible Hulks #614

This is one of those issues that needs to be done – but before anything really good actually happens.  In reality, a lot happens in this issue – even if it doesn’t seem that way.  I mean, you’ve got the people of Earth trying to stop the planet of K’ai from coming – mainly with missiles – and Hiro giving a metaphoric roll of the eyes by ripping chunks of rock off the surface of the planet and throwing them at the bombs.

The Hulk... using the old noggin'

Meanwhile Hulk is busy ripping apart all of the crafts ready to launch into space after Hiro and Co.  Valkyrie, War Mchine, Ant Man, Nova, Beast and the artist formerly known as Captain America are all trying to stop him.  Even when they do – it’s because Hulk let them – and then the Hulk releases his secret weapons… his Hulk Get-Along-Gang.  Everyone attacks – but before they can do too much damage they are threatened with being blasted into The negative zone.  The Hulk lets Banner come out to talk to Steve.

Let the Brawl Begin!

Bruce lets him know that Hiro is the reason K’ai is hurtling toward Earth – and Hiro is his son.  This whole time Skaar is using his Old Power to reactivate the Sakaarian Space craft.  The Hulk group jump onto the ship to meet up with Hiro – the rest of the heroes wait for Steve’s command to blast them into The negative zone – but it doesn’t come.  Steve admits that the Hulks are running the show now…

The Family sets out to greet the long lost son...

The art is a bit stale in this issue – maybe we’ve been getting spoiled with the fantastic art before – but this issue just doesn’t live up to past issues.  There is a small back story contained in this issue that explains why Bruce has let Skaar tag along on what’s going to be a very dangerous mission to stop Hiro – it’s fine but doesn’t add much to the ultimate story going on.  I mean we all know Skaar has the Old Power ability and that he’s pretty ruthless when let loose – so, like I said – this issue is meant as a set up to the whooping to come – and I still can’t wait!  Grade: B-

#614 Variant - not sure why the Red Hulk is on the cover...

  1. Hulk and Valkyrie have been friends for a long time and just recent so has Val and She-Hulk but Val just cut into the Hulk like if she just met him?! Do you know if this is another Valkyrie? If anything, Val should be joining the Hulk family on this mission as a fellow Defender. By the way is that ish#4 of Defenders under the variant? I just p/u the MU Juggy and I have the full scale Hulk bust from SS too, it’s huge and not as heavy as I thought.

    • Issue 4 was the one where Barbara Norris was rescued by Strange,Namor,Surfer, and Hulk and then gained the power of the Valkyrie. That is why it was chosen.

    • A possible answer to your question 465 is that different people have been Valkryie at certain times. She may not remember their adventures because technically she was not the same person. I think Valkryie first appeared in Avengers, don’t know which issue. The next person to become her was the teenage rich girl Samantha in Incredible Hulk 141. Barbara Norris became her in Defenders 4. Another Samantha, who might be the same girl, was Valkryie in the 2001-2002 Busiek Defenders series.

    • Barbara Norris herself first appeared in Incredible Hulk 125-126 before she was Valkyrie. Hope that clears things up a bit.

      • Zeno- You are right Samantha Parrington was the first Valkyire, who battle Hulk and later on the Avengers. The Val of Defenders is Barbara Norris. If this is true that Sam/Val was part of the Defenders 2001 she would still recognized Hulk as a friend and an allied. Sooo why would she cut into Hulk? Continuity in comics can suck sometimes. In comics it seems as if the Hulk has no friends, but that is not true he has Dr. Strange,Clea, Subby, Silver Surfer, Hellcat, NightHawk and Hellstrom. The proof of this is found in Defender#1-#125. By the way Hulk#26 is a good read even if it only has Rulk. Finally don’t forget the Avengers cartoon that’s on today on DisneyXD.

  2. Holy Hell 465 – that IS issue #4 of the Defenders! You are good!

I am not sure about Valkyrie – but I will check into it – because you bring up excellent points!

  3. The odd thing is that the most of the Hulk’s time in the Defenders is treated as if it never happened by most writers. It may be the same Sam though they will not say for certain. Would Sam think of the Hulk has a friend? She was never close to the innocent Hulk or his other incarnations in that mini series. And she helped overthrow Hulk and the Order in the The Order 6 part series. Considering that there isn’t any inconsistency in Pak’s story.

  4. The art could have been better. When has the Hulk lifted something HUGE to show how much stronger he is? The next issue looks strong with him wielding a sword again, finally. He is the STRONGEST ONE THERE IS, and Marvel refuses to make it show. Going into space, it would be nice to see GREEN HULK smash Galactus, some how. I feel the direction Pak is taking is watered down, and, I have to convince myself to like it. BS on how the Green Scar Hulk gets taken down by the Avengers, even if it was a ploy. Give the Green Hulk glowing eyes! And his own title again. Get rid of these Hulks, and NO MORE. (Thor has a way more original storyline, and it’s based on mythology already told!) Hiro is becoming an good, irritating, arrogant villain though. Can’t wait till he get’s his ass kicked.

  5. I have to be honest. I have no interest in Hiro. I find him boring. I’m looking forward to him getting slapped around! 🙂
