Hulk #26 (2010) – The Review

Hulk #26

Vampire Variant

I know, I know – I was supposed to post this a while back – give me a break!  Here we go, Parker has a whole lot of fixing to do.  I know this – and I knew this was going to be an issue when he took over the reigns from a writer who seemed like Alzheimer’s set in after he started writing.  This means Red needs to meet up with all of the Marvel Heroes that he beat during Loeb’s tenure and Parker needs to not only explain that Red is on the right side now – but also set things right and make the heroes that SHOULD’VE kicked Red’s ass the first time getting there just desserts.  This i where the problem arises… we just had a showdown with Iron Man – and now, in the very next issue, he has another showdown, but with Thor this time.

Banner - with a verbal bitch slap to Ross 🙂

I felt like the original storyline could have gone at least another full issue.  Instead, Parker completes it in half an issue and onto the next “Scorched Earth” plan to dismantle.  This time it’s a pair of meteors heading toward earth.  Am I getting ahead of myself?  Sorry – let’s try this – Iron Man was not eaten by the people in the last issue – instead Tony got out just in time and remotely uses his machine to fight the people off.  Stark realizes Red is there to help and gives him instructions to the main power source and tells him to destroy it.  Red does what he needs to – and even saves a woman there – but it turns out she is infected too – but Red jumps off before anything is done – which means we will be revisiting that at some point.

Red gets to smash!

When Red rejoins Banner and Rogers – there is Thor – and Thor isn’t happy about seeing Red.  So he beats the hell out of him – but Red doesn’t fight back – he lets Thor know they are on the same side – but Thor lets Red know he doesn’t give a crap and shoves a lightning bolt up his a$$!

Hulk and Thor go at it!

... and Thor with the knock out!

Banner sends a hologram of Galactus to break the two up – and then Not Cap tells them about the two asteroids and the black hole.  Red and Thor head out and destroy the asteroids – but Red gets a bit too close to the black hole and begins to get sucked in… as told to him by the Watcher.

Red - doing his job!

Like I mentioned before – it would have been nice to let the original storyline develop a bit more but Parker really knows how to end on a cliff hanger!  We’ll see how this pans out – but maybe the Watcher is still holding a grudge over the sucker punch Red landed all those issues ago.  I know he’s just supposed to watch and all – but damn – you don’t let a punk ass get away with smacking you when you’re not looking!  Grade – B

  1. I loved this issue. Great characterization. ” I am not the god of reason and understanding….” LOL! Thank you for ORIGINAL VILLIANS in the making! Parker has impressed and I really like Hardman’s edgy art. They should show how the madder the RED gets, the hotter he gets more. Not sure about the A-Bomb story line….so far not liking…just bring him back to Rick soon, please. I really like Banner in this title, even if he is just a threat to kick rulks ass.

    • I agree logan – although like I said – I do wish Prker took his time with these stories instead of seeming to rush through them…

I also agree about the A-Bomb storyline – it’s just kind of silly.

You might notice I edited your comment to take out the word Rulk – because that name is longer allowed on my site – except here whre I’m explaining this – that name is horrible and I am doing my part in getting rid of people using it. Call him Red, Ross, Red Hulk – ANYTHING but Rulk… thanks

    • I more or less liked the issue too, but I personally didn’t see any characterization, in fact that’s a big part of my complaint. But who knows.

  2. Dude, You and I are on the exact same page here! Our reviews are like companion pieces this week, which means we must be right lol.

Also I just emailed you, and my computer was being stupid, so It looks as though I may have sent you the same email a bunch of times. Just so you know, despite the possibly large volume of messages, there should only be two items in the messages.

  3. Why don’t they rename this comic Red Hulk already? I personally would like to see him as a villain than a hero, well let see what happens. I’m also looking to see what happens when he become an Avenger, now that should be some drama. I’m still waiting Marvel, for Mangog, Blastar, Gladiator, Hyperion or Juggernaut to show up in these Hulk pages. It’s time to show the Hulk strength on a planetary level.

    • I think they should have left Red a villian as well – but it was obvious they were going to do the cliche thing and make him a hero…

  4. Almost feel that Parker should write Thor. I like that a lot happens in this comic. Red Hulk is basically Grey Hulk in character. Marvel ruined this concept. I think it would have been better had red Hulk been Banner as a result of WW hulk. ROSS IS NOT HULK! Though the writing is way better than the nightmare we were inflicted by Loeb. I really like how Banner’s manner has been evolved. The Hulk is green. He could be depicted, drawn, so much cooler. Red hulk is an insult to my interest, though I take it, as any loyal fan.

  5. If I ever meet Loeb in person I will probably punch him in the face. Quesada too.

  6. I enjoyed this issue much more than TIH 614, which is a worry. I hate this red hulk crap, and i hate this incredible hulks crap. For god sake bring back hulk as he should be. And another thing, why is hulk wearing black bike shorts and ammo pouches??? And why is it Hulk is almost like banner?? In the classic words of hulk himself, “Hulk is Hulk”.WTF?

I have just re read the intire Sal Buscema run, and while some of the Len Wein issues were so so, the Bill mantalo issues were fantastic! I really miss the good old days where hulk was hulk, and he was the strogest one there is…..unlike now when we have a team of hulks, give me a break please!!!

I really hope that once this pathetic story line hurries up and ends and we get some old school hulk action again!

  7. Ah…Hulk is amlost as smart as Banner I mean. I really dont like this new hulk at all. Dont know if I got that message accross 🙂

  8. I love the Hulk! I miss the old “Hulk smash”! No offense, but he’s been different from what I grew up with. I know I’m dating myself here (I’m 41) but I really long for the way the Hulk was when I was a kid. Don’t get me wrong, Hulk is my favorite. Check out my Hulk reviews on my channel on YouTube!
