I Hope Your Head Catches Up with Your EGO! A Year Worth of Cringe-Worthy Hulk Moments: Week 16

Let’s have a little fun and discuss some of the more graphic, violent, sad, or just plain awkward moments that have plastered the Hulk history.  Be it a passing meeting between spouses of a gruesome scene that nobody saw coming – this year I’ll have you squirming in your seat!

Let’s look back and notice that no other enemy of Hulk’s rogue gallery have had the transformations that the Leader has.  He went from a sanitation worker to ultra-evil genius to a man with regular intelligence – to super evil genius again!  This time with a bulbous head rather than just a vertically-gifted head.  Years go by and suddenly the Hulk comes face to face with a grotesque, disturbing Samuel Sterns

Of course, the Hulk arrives just in time for the Leader’s head to expand to the point of explosion.  Nothing like running into a old friend and end up with his brain matter all over you… gross.

Like a Melted Marshmallow Hitting the Floor: A Year Worth of Cringe-Worthy Hulk Moments – Week 15

In one of the more gruesome moments concerning the Hulk is not to do with the Hulk at all.  Since this comic will be reviewed completely on a later date I will just offer up the scene in question. In Doctor Strange #70 with an evil Dr. Strange looking for a host body – the best candidate being Rick Jones –  he finds himself at the scene where the Jones’ were brought together in matrimony.  The woman who own the venue was none-too happy to see another superhero coming.

She confronts the evil doppelganger only to have her skin liquefied.  Even worse is the sound they give to the body when dropped and left behind.  That’s right – this creature didn’t even kill her – just distort her enough to be grotesque for the rest of her life!  Of course, the villain has a bit of karma coming to him.

When the Hulk catches up with the double he throws him, splashing his body to the sand, crushed and stepped on, absorbed into the beach below.  This isn’t the end of the bad guy, of course, but more on that another time.

Hulk/Abomination Cars (2014)

hulk stuff oct 009

I found these a few years ago and I loved them instantly!  My favorite thing is the fact that these cars are not just simple cars with images in them but instead they are more in the vain of the Pixar opus Cars.  Not to be confused with the utterly forgettable and embarrassing sequel. These cars are worth picking up due to the unique look to them alone!  Keep an eye out as I didn’t find these in a toy store – I only found them in my local grocery store!  So, while buying some apples make sure to check the toy aisle and see if these cars are there!

Incredible Hulk Tsum-Tsum (2016)

more stuff 011

My daughter absolutely loves these things!  When purchasing a Black Widow Tsum-Tsum at Target I wondered if they had a Hulk.  A trip to The Disney Store confirmed my suspicion seeing not only a mini Tsum-Tsum but also a super-sized, asprin shaped, stuffed Hulk!  I picked up both but I had to pick up an extra for my son. Yes, the boy is fully talking now and says Hulk regularly.  It might have to do with the Hulk posters I have put in his room – but I like to think it’s just karma for me allowing my daughter to love Captain America over the jade giant.

I’m not so sure that these little stuffed sausages are everyone’s taste.  They seem like a flash in the pan – much like Mighty Muggs was – but for the meantime they are worth a gander.  If you do choose to pick one up pick up the larger one – it’s cooler and less available.

Pratt Goes Pop… and Again: A Year of Cringe-Worthy Hulk Moments: Week 14

Let’s have a little fun and discuss some of the more graphic, violent, sad, or just plain awkward moments that have plastered the Hulk history.  Be it a passing meeting between spouses of a gruesome scene that nobody saw coming – this year I’ll have you squirming in your seat!

What is it with exploding Hulk villains?  In week 9 we saw Hubert St. Johns get injected with Hulk blood and grow to an enormous size.  Well, years and years later another man known as Agent Pratt suffered a similar end.  A bit more drawn out and written in a low point of Hulk history by Bruce Jones, Agent Pratt was infatuated with getting Hulk’s blood for Section H.  His cockiness was his ultimate downfall as he thought he could control the force of nature the Hulk is.  In a showdown on the side of cliff he was injected with the stolen Hulk blood and immediately began to mutate, distort and eventually blow up.

Or so it would seem… in fact Agent Pratt did reemerge and held a even worse fate then St. Johns.  In another show down with the Hulk Agent Pratt tried to take on the Hulk and is pummeled to death… and then ripped apart.  Yeah – the Hulk actually ripped apart a human being.  A mutated, evil human being – but a human being none the less.  Remember, this is at a time when the Hulk was not just a raging engine of destruction.  He had a more rational train of thought.  And yet, Jones still decided to write that the Hulk ripped apart a person rather than beat him and contain him.

Jones run was full of odd choices and odder Hulk behavior – mainly because the Bruce Jones never understood the character fully.  Pratt’s death perfectly encapsulates why this run was needed to be axed out of continuity – and thank you to Mr. David for doing so!

Hulk Appearances – Volume 4: Wonder Man #26/27

This is such a fun little addition to the site let’s see how long I can keep this going!  This month we’ll discuss the very forgettable and very odd guest-shot in Wonder Man #26 and #27 from 1993.  Hulk was still part of the Pantheon and looking to fight anyone threatening world peace.  Hence, him coming to defend the Islamic Republic of Kanem from Wonder Man.  Simon Williams was being framed for destroying the Agrimax – a machine that could end hunger in the third worlds.  Of course, Hulk didn’t know this and immediately comes to put the smack-down on the former actor/superhero with a publicity problem.

While the two trade blows and, astonishingly, Wonder Man is keeping up with the Hulk.  Hulk’s taunts over the fact that Williams is in possession of powers that he doesn’t even know how to use (Simon did get a bit of an upgrade before this issue) and that this is not the first time the Hulk has encountered a bumbling hero like this.  After the dusts settles between the two, who now realize they shouldn’t be fighting each other, they decide to team up and go after the real enemy… an enemy who has been watching the whole time.  An ill-named duo, the Furor and the Plan Master!

CCF01082016_0003

The following issue is pretty action packed and hilarious as the Hulk and Wonder Man reveal the traitor, save the Agrimax, pound on the Furor and even use the bulky foe to crush his partner/father? By the end of the issue the two disappear in a flash of light and Wonder Man heads home – only to find out that his girl had her brother, who she had custody of, taken away from her because of Williams involvement with them.

While the art is pretty terrible and the names of the big bads are laughable it is still a fun couple of issues.  The original meeting of the two heroes where they throw tanks at each other is worth the buck that these two will set you back!  The only real mention of the Hulk’s classic behavior is when Wonder Man quips about the Hulk getting stronger while he gets madder.  Find these issues, if you can, and enjoy some real 90’s fun!
