I have been enjoying the Diamond “statues” or dioramas for what they are. More affordable and often because the paint applications or sculpts aren’t as detailed as some of their counterparts, some collectors aren’t very impressed with these pieces. I can’t say I blame them, but for me, they are a really alternative to the supremely expensive collector’s market of statues. Sideshow and the like have taken the idea of high end collectables to a different stratosphere with their $600+ pricing on most of their products. Some say this was an inevitable evolution to the market where as I see it more as a travesty to the entire industry as a whole. Less people collect statues now than ever before as a result.
Like I mentioned, Diamond got into the statue game a few years back introducing us to these less expensive alternatives. Sure they paint applications aren’t as exact – in fact, one of the reasons I don’t have the Thanos piece of theirs in my collection is due to the many run offs I saw on the finished product.
This Grey Hulk is no exception as I’ve noticed a few areas that don’t have the precision to detail you’d like to see but it certainly isn’t an eyesore when displayed. This particular piece is the paint variant to the green (and, unfortunately, red) Hulk released years before – this time with a new head mold. I like the grimace that appears on this Hulk as the green piece had too many paint issues on the face with the gritting teeth usually being the culprit of most of the complaints.
This sculpt has none of those issues as the mouth is left in an aggravated, almost “sour puss” expression. Unfortunately, this grimace doesn’t really lend itself to the pose that the diorama is in. While this is not the greatest piece it’s not bad. Truthfully, I wasn’t willing to shell out the retail on this so I was psyched to find this at my local GameStop, on sale, for an absolute song!
My wife has a unique problem. She WANTS to get me Hulky goodness for Christmas but I have pretty much everything. Finding things I don’t have is quite the quest. Lucky for her Diamond Select released a statue – well, a large figure, or statue, or just a big Hulk – whatever you want to call it. It’s certainly an eye catcher! The Hulk isn’t one of those super detailed Bowen masterpieces – but it is worth a look.
The Hulk has an animated style to it that reminds me of Bruce Timm a bit but also has it’s own unique look to it that has it’s own appeal. The paint applications are not the best – especially the pants – but they are also not distractingly bad. The face sculpt is has a bit of a blandness and a wash might’ve brought out a few more details but it isn’t terrible. The only real issue I can harp on are the obvious seams that appear at the neck line.
Still, the price is right on these statues and, posed correctly, look nice. This is worth the pick up without a need to haggle over how much you have to pay.
I have to ask here – this is something I’ve been thinking about doing for a while – my sister was down in the Hulk Room the other day and commented on the fact that almost every Hulk statue out there is a different color green. I looked and agreed and thought it was a bit funny. So – here’s the question – which statue do you think has the best color green for the Hulk?
Vote Below! I will tell you my thoughts next week after I people have had a chance to vote.
There are two busts out currently based on the World War Hulk storyline. Each was made by Diamond Select – one was supposed to be limited to 1000 – it is now limited to 800. The one in the pictures was supposed to be the variant limited to only 200 – but instead it’s limited to 500. This is #29.
I received this bust right after I got the Bowen Busts – and this is significantly smaller – and thus, a bit of a let down, when it appeared at my door. I still like the sculpt – and the fact that they made busts based on this storyline – but this bust is proof that Bowen is the leader in his field and that no one else even comes close to Bowen perfection in statues and busts.
There is a rumor out there that the McFarlane-inspired grey Hulk statue from Diamond Select has been cancelled. Here is the picture of it so you know what I’m talking about:
I wasn’t sure if I was going to pick this piece up anyways – wasn’t sure because of the recent surge in Hulk merchandise recently (and the movie merchandise hasn’t even come out yet! Sheesh!) and of all of the sta – wait did I just say “Sheesh”? Oh, crap I think I did – of all of the statues that have come out recently this was by far the least impressive. I was probably going to pass on this statue anyways, so it doesn’t really affect me – but I know alot of Hulk fans out there are crying out in pain right now. Sorry bros.
There is still a chance that this is an ugly rumor and that it’s still coming out. I’ll keep you posted though
