They have released so many glasses at this point it’s hard to keep track of them all. I found these at Target – and noticed something a little different. These glasses didn’t feature just one classic image of a hero – in a move both brilliant and a little disappointing – they have shared glasses between two heroes now. In a sick twist of fate this glass is shared between Hulk and Captain America. The sick part is that my daughter’s favorite character is Cap and mine is the Hulk. Usually, when I but a set of glasses she would get the Cap one… except I couldn’t just give her this one because on the back (or front, depending on how you look at it) is the Hulk!
The Marvel tumblers they release are certainly plentiful – I hate to admit that I am such a sucker for these things I snag every new one I see. Marvel seems to be getting smarter though as they are printing two different characters on one cup. This one features the Hulk and Cap – which is perfect – me and my daughters favorite characters sharing one cup! Even better the Hulk is a Sal Buscema! Who doesn’t love the sound effect ZUNG? Does anyone else try to make the sounds when presented in the issues? Only me? Well this is awkward…
I remember back in the day when if you wanted to drink from a glass that had the Hulk on it you either had to wait for a fast food chain to release a superhero set or a convenience store to have a Marvel theme. Now though, most big box stores carry some sort of superhero glassware. the best pieces feature some sort of vintage images – but it’s all pretty great! The glass above is pretty hard to see, I know, but it is the amazing Jim Steranko Hulk illustration from The Incredible Hulk Annual #1. It’s a white outline which makes it hard to photograph but does look awesome in person.
The other is a simple glass with the Hulk fist on it given to me by children for my birthday. I think the Hulk fist is a better symbol for our Jade Giant than the one they were trying to use years ago which was a yellow and green radioactive symbol.
Marvel Glasses Set
I can be pretty sure that these glasses are made with the smallest amount of care it takes to make glasses – sure – they may easily break, but something about these sets makes me all giddy inside. I think I like the glass sets more than I do some of the action figures that come out! In fact, I may have to create a page just to showcase these sets – because there have been so many! These glasses are a whole lot slimmer than the sets before them. That does mean you can not drink yourself into oblivion with just one glass… it may take one and a half now!
These may surpass the Toon Tumblers for me!
The Hulk Glass
Marvel seems to be releasing more and more of these sets – and I do like the ones I have seen – but I can also see myself getting to the point where I don’t feel like collecting anymore glasses. This set is a bit different though – instead of just the image on a glass this set is colored glasses with the heroes faces on the side!
Does the image look familar? It totally should – not only from the hat I posted earlier but also the can hugger I just posted. So, of course you have Marvel’s heavy hitters – Cap, Wolvie, Spidey and the Hulk – blue, yellow, red and green. Like I stated – this set is a bit different than any I have seen before – and the set is pretty cool – but they need to be handwashed… as usual – and if these images fade… well, you will be left with a strange looking colored glass.
I just might have to seek another one of these out!
1978 7-11 Hulk Glass
There are 2 Hulk glasses you can get from 7-11 – this is the rarer – and the better looking. The 1977 glass – although older – is more plentiful and can usually be found for around $10 on ebay. There are a few of these glasses on ebay that people try to sell for about a hundred – but that’s not what I paid. I like rare collectibles – don’t get me wrong – but some of these collectibles are not worth what people are asking (Stretch Hulk comes to mind). This glass is a lot thinner – or maybe I am just used to the Toon Tumblers heft now – so it’s also a lot more fragile.
Back of Glass
I wonder how much Hulk stuff we would have had the 70’s show not been a hit – or worse – not produced at all! I can only thanks the Marvel gods that they did produce such a show – and with that came a ton of Hulk merchandise! The Hulk, at one time, rivaled the popularity of Spiderman – maybe even more so – because having a network, prime time show means that Housewives who have never picked up a comic before suddenly know the character.
This Hulk Image Rocks!
Found this at Newbury Comics in Dartmouth. What a perfect picture to choose for the tumbler – or as we call them around these parts – a glass. I see a glass from 1978 on ebay going for about $70.00 right now. Highly doubtful that anything made nowadays will retain that kind of value – but it was still nice to find. I think Orange Juice would look awesome in this glass.
