The Hulk That Never Happened…

Uh-oh… someone took Hulk’s Ju-Ju…

This is a great story – so stick with it – and let me know what you think.  Back in May, Syco announced a brand new license.  The Lou Ferrigno Hulk statue!  I know many of Hulk collectors that had been waiting for something from the late 70’s TV show.  But many hurdles must be cleared to get this license – for one, Lou Ferrigno has property rights to his likeness.  Marvel has rights to the Hulk, of course, and even the network that originally aired the series has parts of the rights.

Here comes the Hulk!

So, in other words, it’s a bitch and a half to produce anything to do with this classic show!  That’s why we haven’t seen figures or other statues or most anything else!  It’s not because it wouldn’t sell – it’s because too many hands are in the pot already.  So how did Syco get the rights to produce the statue?  Well, read on…

Alternative shot

BUT FIRST!  We must address the statue itself.  Amazingly, a sculptor named Chris created THIS Lou Ferrigno Hulk statue:

The original Hulk kit!

Everyone, as you can imagine, loved it!  When Syco announced the license most everyone who knew about the sculpt hoped that it was Chris’ Hulk that they picked to produce.  Well, according to Cris himself, pictures of his sculpt were used to obtain the license.  Syco denies this – but the sculpt looks oddly similar:

Hmmmm….

And by similar I mean not as good.  So, now, back to Syco and their Lou Ferrigno statue.  That’s how they listed it – a “Lou Ferrigno statue”.  They claimed that Lou himself own the rights to his likeness as the Hulk.  Even though many people talked to Syco about this project – telling them that it doesn’t make sense.  Marvel doesn’t have a say in producing a Hulk statue?  Any Hulk statue?  That just can’t be!  Well, things moved forward.  Big Bad Toy Store listed the statue as a pre-order.  Soon, Syco even announced that there would be a Gamma Glow version!  The Hulk never glowed green in the TV show – but whatever…

And then, just last week, the BOOM was finally lowered.  Anyone who ordered this statue received an email like this :

“Hi – We unfortunately need to inform you that the Lou Ferrigno Statue has been cancelled. Syco Collectibles created this item and licensed it with Lou Ferrigno’s company – Ferrigno Fit. Syco informed BBTS that Lou Ferrigno has the rights to his likeness, and that this item was licensed and approved. There apparently was confusion between Syco & Ferrigno about the scope of the license; while Ferrigno does own rights to his likeness, Marvel owns the rights to his likeness as The Hulk. We were contacted by Marvel about this situation yesterday and asked to remove this product, and we are happy to comply with them. Marvel is one of the strongest brands BBTS carries, and we would never intentionally carry an item that infringes on their intellectual property.

We have cancelled your preorder, no charges were made to your card, and we have removed this item from our site. We apologize for the inconvenience on this item”

The unapinted version of the produced piece did not look so bad…

So, it turns out that, yes indeed, you do need Marvel’s permission.  Something a whole lot of us already knew.  I was sort of waiting for this day – I knew it was coming – but this is certainly a cautionary tale.  So to recap – allegedly, some people stole some photos to obtain a license – and then turned around and had someone else create a less stellar and cheaper imitation of the same sculpt.  Then they added a disastrous paint job, and overcharged people for it.  But karma really is a bitch because it all came crashing down on Syco’s head.  Too bad.  It would have been fun to see this license open up again!

MPC Incredible Hulk Snap Model Kit (2012)

Re-release Hulk Kit

Like 465 mentioned in an earlier comment – this is a re-release of a model from the 70’s.  I was psyched to see this at my LCS because I was never able to obtain the original kit.  I have quickly put it together to let all the gammabros here to check out what it looks like out of the box – but of course you need to glue it together and slap some paint on it for it to really pop!

Hulk Kit

The model comes with a choice of fists – or open hands (which I prefer for this) where you can place something for him to hold.  What should he hold?  Well – the amount of things I could list would be insanely long and arbitrary – but here’s the top 3: #3) A Carrot #2) A Handmade Hulk Sign #1) An Action Figure of a Hulk Foe.  Of course #9 is turning him into a table leg.

Great sculpt!

Pankey’s Hulk Kit (2008)

I don’t go gaga over a lot of Hulk kits – but there are a few that I like.  I remember when this came out and Pankey over at the SF contacted me about it – but I just couldn’t pay what he was asking… but that was mainly due to the shipping over seas.  This kit is perfect to display higher – as the figure itself leans forward – but it’s also the kind of kit you want to see all of it!

Close Up 1

Hulk looking down! When you see this look it's time to stop pissing him off!

So, you may ask, how did I ge such a kit if not from the one who produced it?  Well, ebay of course!  I’m telling you – I know a lot of people are down on ebay recently but I am psyched it’s still around.  There is no other place on the net that will offer more and give you such an array of prices on pieces.  There are people on there trying to sell action figures from the 90s, calling them vintage, and asking a premium price – but then you will also find the people on ebay who are just listing things for extra cash and people trying to get rid of stuff.  That’s where you’ll find the deals!  And remember my #1 rule: Be Patient!

The Foot Shot!

The anatomy of this kit is interesting.  The Hulk has SO MANY bulging muscles I have to admit when I first looked it over in pictures I thought it looked a bit silly.  In person though, it looks pretty damn sweet!  Do you remember the ending of Gremlins?  Where Spike’s back started to bubble and little Gremlins were going to pop out?  It does remind me a bit of that – but I still think the kit is worth every penny spent on it!

Turned the other way

You've seen the end of Gremlins, right?

Dynabol’s “Mean Green” Kit – Finished Piece! (2009)

Mean Green... errr... Grey Kit

Mean Green... errr... Grey Kit

This one was a long way coming!  First off – I was looking at Jade Giant’s collection and saw this kit – you might remember the picture from before:

mattbrundagehulks

I inquired about it.  Some pieces just speak to you.  This is certainly a unique take on the Hulk – not really in scale with any of the other pieces I have – but man, oh man, I just fell in love with it the moment I saw it.  People have expressed mixed feelings on this kit, but those who do like it – or LOVE it like I do – speak very highly of it.  I saw this piece and immediately thought it looked like the grey Hulk.  I found a great, talented painter on The Statue Forum, named Jen, and she did such an awesome job with it!  I sent her a few reference photos of the grey Hulk – McFarlane Hulk and others – and a lot of the grey Hulk illustrations have him without eyebrows.  So Jen left of the eyebrows – how perfect!

Grey Hulk - Bad Ass!

Dynabol is a pretty talented guy – he produced this kit years ago – and I, being a more “licensed products” collector don’t plan on picking up very many kits – but I just had to have this.  And then I asked for a commission from him – I will post the amazing pieces he sent me – maybe this week with a follow up announcement.  Something you guys don’t want to miss!  Let’s just say – if there is a day to not check in on this site – it’s not Wednesday.  In other words – check back tomorrow!

Turn to the right!

Turn to the right!

I did get this piece back pretty quickly – but the first time I opened the box – this is what I pulled out:

Hulk is the strong.... AAAAUUUUGGGHHH! Hulk have no leg!

Hulk is the strong.... AAAAUUUUGGGHHH! Hulk have no leg!

Pretty gruesome, huh?

Turn to the left!

Turn to the left!

If you think it looks brutal – imagine having to pull it out of the box like this.  Anyways, Jen quickly fixed it up and sent it back good as new!  This guy now sits on the top of my desk – an honor that only the HH Hulk and the SS PF Hulk have!  The pose he chose for the Hulk is absolutely perfect!  And it’s always about the details – check out his eyes – Jen painted them green – like the rage that was still imprisoned inside the monster!  I am so excited about having this piece in the collection – thanks to Dynabol for creating this masterpiece!

Another item I posted – just a little while ago – is on it’s way to being finished.  It’s the Mean Green kit from dynabol.  Jen, my painter, is doing a fantastic job of bringing this kit to life!  The top pic is just a work in progress and far from finished – but looks fantastic so far!  I can’t wait till it’s done!

Double shot Friday!  Hoo-Hah!  I am pleased to say, after I fell in love with this sculpt I was informed that there is just one left – and that I could buy it for a reduced price!  Matt Brundage, a sculptor that frequents the Statue Forum, is the artist who created this.  I showed this kit already (in JG’s collection pics) and now this is mine!  And I love it!  I already sent this little guy out to a painter, named Jen, who lives in Texas.  I asked her to paint it up into a grey Hulk statue rather than the green you saw here:

mattbrundagehulks

But man, oh man, that green looks really good.  I have absolute faith I picked the right painter for this kit – I’ve seen her other work and it’s amazing!  I also had a good feeling because Jen is my sister’s name.  I can’t wait to show you the finished product – but for now you’ll have to do with the pieces of a great, unique Hulk sculpt.  I will post this when I get it back – can’t wait!

Man, it looks comfortable in there...

Jerry Macaluso Kit (1999)

Look at that snarl!

Look at that snarl!

I have a friend from the Statue Forum that has an amazing Hulk collection himself – check in tomorrow because I will be posting pics from his collection here! – but, Jade Giant – or JG – has a few rare pieces in his collection that are to freakin’ die for.  Last Monday I went into Reading and in this great Comic Shop called Comically Speaking (highly recommended!) the owner there had a couple of rare pieces that I picked up.  I picked up quite a few things but 2 pieces that are just extremely rare that I couldn’t help but pick up.  This is one of them!  Not much is known about this very rare kit – a few things that are known though are that Jerry Macaluso of SOTA toys back in 1999 sculpted this Hulk in an attempt to get a Marvel License.  Here is the mock-up of the promo artwork:

It was supposed to be a two piece sculpt – Hulk vs. Wolverine – but only the Hulk was made.  And because Marvel didn’t pick up this license then this piece was never made.  A master sculpt and one mock-up for Marvel was made.  Then someone from the SOTA toy company got a hold of it and did an extremely small run.  It’s unknown for sure exactly how many were made but it’s estimated that there were only 10 to 20.

Like I said – only 10 to 20 – but no one really knows!  When I walked into Comically Speaking and saw this kit I was floored!  A seller on ebay recently tried to sell his but put it up for $1,200.  First off, he totally lied in his description of the sculpt claiming that only 4 were made.  Then, he wrote that because there’s only 4 and there’s 50 exclusive Hulk vs. Spiderman dios that sells for over $1,000 then this must be worth the same!  Well, sorry buddy, that’s not exactly how it works.  I paid what I thought was a reasonable price – if it was anymore I wouldn’t have picked it up – but the owner seemed to know exactly what he was doing.  By the way, the ebay auction never even finished because he was reported as a fraud for lying about the item he was selling.  But no worries, no had bid and no one was going to buy this for that ridiculous price anyways.

Kit vs. Maquette

Kit vs. Maquette

It’s not very big, shown here with the other rare item I got (that’s right, a repainted grey Hulk Maquette, I will be posting this next week)- but it’s such a unique take on the Hulk, great pose!  There’s so much potential there – it’s so masterfully sculpted and has the fluid motion and raw power of the Hulk that no other sculptor has ever captured!  It’s unbelievable that Marvel passed on this.  I know for a fact that JG has one – and this guy has one – he made his into an unbeatable dio that is surely a great piece for any fan of the Hulk or Terminator!

Hulk vs Leader!

Hulk vs Leader!

This is a grail – a grail to be sure – and since I’ve seen Hulk vs. Wolvie and Terminator in this pose I decided to go with Hulk vs. Leader!  The Leader is from the Face-Off 2-pack.  I like the McFarlane Leader even though people say his head looks like a pair of testicles.  This sculpt doesn’t have a base.  It had none to speak of.  Most of the sculpts I have seen have a custom base.  I’m thinking of making one – but I will have to see.

Leader does not stand a chance!
