Marvel Fanfare #29 Mini-Canvas (2012)

mike hulk 021 (2)

John Byrne should come back to Marvel to tell more tales!  Let’s put any silly disagreements aside and make some more art!  We need him back in comics!  He obviously has the chops still as we’ve all seen some of his recent commissions.  I also believe that he still has stories to tell!  1999 Hulk reboot aside I think his style would certainly fit into today’s narrative.  This mini-canvas is great with the weathered look and classic art.  Wall space is more the issues these days!

If only today’s Marvel had as much faith in their stories rather than the number on the cover.  What could have been with this run…

Happy Birthday John Byrne!

Everyone has their opinion on comic creators – and few are more controversial than Byrne himself – but I wish the man a very happy birthday!  Thanks for all you’ve done to contribute to the Marvel lore!

Atkins (You’re Doing it Wrong): A Year Worth of Cringe-Worthy Hulk Moments – Week 9

Let’s have a little fun and discuss some of the more graphic, violent, sad, or just plain awkward moments that have plastered the Hulk history.  Be it a passing meeting between spouses of a gruesome scene that nobody saw coming – this year I’ll have you squirming in your seat!

There are two types of people in Hulk lore – those who see the tragic state of Dr. Banner’s… condition and those who see him and want to harness the unimaginable power for themselves.  The latter are the people to watch out for.  Such is the case of Hubert St. Johns – a man who has hired two unhinged scientists to not only capture the Hulk but to figure out a way to give him the gamma power he seeks.

He gets what he wants… as you can see – but of course gamma power, being so unpredictable (or at least it was until… say… 2008), does different things to different people (or at least it did… until… say 2008 and 2015) and Mr. St. Johns received all the gamma power he wanted – and more – as it accelerated the fat in his body to a terrifying amount.  Notice the floor buckle where he stands.

His dream is short-lived of course as he begins to choke on his own bursting insides and he tumbles onto the two scientists who helped him create the monstrosity he’s become.  Giving us a complete but pretty disturbing ending.  I can’t get the thought out of my head about that poor woman trapped under a ton of sweaty flesh… suffocating her.

The Buck Stops Here: A Year of Cringe-Worthy Hulk Moments – Week 3

Let’s have a little fun and discuss some of the more graphic, violent, sad, or just plain awkward moments that have plastered the Hulk history.  Be it a passing meeting between spouses of a gruesome scene that nobody saw coming – this year I’ll have you squirming in your seat!

There was a time when we could write off the Hulk’s rage as an innocent child-like tantrum.  It was oddly reassuring to think that the Hulk destroyed a town, not in a malicious manner, but instead, because he didn’t know any better to stop.  All of that was put to the wayside in the first few pages of the short lived Byrne run on The Incredible Hulk.  With the Incredible Hulk #314 we see the Engine of Destruction land in a forest, startling a buck.

With one vicious panel we see the innocence of the Hulk erased.  In one swift move the buck’s neck is broken, its life is lost and the Hulk stands without emotion.  We truly see the Hulk without a conscience, without morals, and as he truly is without humanity: a monster.

Gary Gets into Byrne’s Hulk Head!

Hulk smokin' the gange!

Over at Gary’s blog he has done a 4 part 3 part blog.  You read that right – he did a 3 part blog posted in 4.  That sneaky guy!  Anyways, the posts are all about the Byrne years – not only a review of the Byrne issues – but what was supposed to come before he left – and maybe WHY Byrne left.  His ideas are pretty interesting – if you agree with him or not.  Check them all out here:

Visionaries: John Byrne Volume 1 (2008)

John byrnevisionaries

John Byrne certainly deserves some credit.  He wrote stories that people still talk about today.  Not Hulk stories mind you, but more like X-Men stories.  He did try new things with the Hulk.  He married Bruce and Betty and seperated the Hulk from Banner.  And let’s not forget his art.  He does a beautiful rendition of the Hulk.  But really, this was it for him.  He has Samson and Hulk fight for 5 issues and then handed the writing duty off to Milgrom who too the ball and carried to bringing the Grey Hulk back.  So, I guess he deserves props for that.  Good read and worth picking up.  B+
