Acquisition Thursday!

hulks2 002

Here it is – Thursday!  Actually, I write this post on Wednesday night – fresh from my return from my LCS.  Picked up the new issues of Hulk and Savage Wolverine – which I will work on getting reviews up tomorrow.  For now, something I have had for a bit, something that appeared in my last video – the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection Constrictor Lead Figure (2012, $14.99).  Who would have thought that this villain of the week, sort of throw away character would have such a lasting impact on the MU.  I mean, some characters have come and gone without another appearance (Aquon anyone?) and then others seem to have a lasting life beyond what they should have – Constrictor is one of those characters to me!  But this figure came out great!

Abomination Lead Figurine (2008)

Abomination Lead Figure

It was just a matter of time before they made the Abomination – with the Hulk, the grey Hulk and the Leader all present it’s only fitting that they released the Abomination here in the States before the year is through.  I say here in the States because these figurines, all painted in lead paint – yes it’s harmful – but only if you digest it, so keep these out of your mouths, are actually made and released overseas.  Only specialty comic shops carry these, so you most likely won’t find them in any major chain stores.

They are obviously taking a little more interest into making bases for these figures – I like bases with a little more pizazz – I like figures that tell a bit of a story rather than just standing there.  As you can tell comparing the Hulk’s standard black base to the Abomination’s rocky rubble base.  Abomination holding the steel pipe ready to knock the be-jesus out of someone is a perfect pose.  The Leader was posed in his classic pose but the Abomination doesn’t have what we can call a “classic” pose – so just showing aggression is as good as any.

The great thing about the little collectible booklet that comes with these figures are the time lines of their story in the comics.  You can follow their every move – like, for example, I wasn’t aware that immediately following his debut in comics he went to Thor’s comic and then right back to Hulk’s.  The later 80’s and 90’s had Abomination popping in and out of a bunch of comic heroes.  West Coast Avengers, Hawkeye, Spiderman, Namor, X-Man, X-Men – and then of course came the Betty saga.  I wonder if Peter David meant for the Abomination to kill Betty?  I wonder if he laid the groundwork for such a memorable moment in Hulk history.

UPDATE: I emailed PD and he in fact confirmed that he always intended for the Abomination to be the one who killed Betty.  Kudos to Peter David for emailing back fans with such silly questions…

The Leader Lead Figure (2008)

I actually like the fact that they chose to base the Leader figure on McFarlane’s version.  I prefer his to the classic “Tall Head” Leader.  I would like both – but if I can only have one I’m pleased it’s this one.  I am having a heck of a time trying to figure out how to work these pictures with this new program.  Man, why couldn’t it be as easy as the last program?  Anyways, I’m surprised that they haven’t done an Abomination.  This hopefully will be a sign of things to come.  They have a Rhino figure – but I didn’t think it looked very good.  The color booklet that it comes with is as great as the Hulk one is – it’s gives all sorts of info and lets anyone who isn’t as informed about the Hulk lore in on some great tidbits.  For example – who out there remembers that The Leader has a brother?  No?  Well, well, well…

Grey Hulk Lead Figure (2007)

I showed you the green figure – now here is the grey.  These little guys are great, but I’m not so sure I would want to collect all of these.  Some people strictly collect these figures.  That’s a whole lot of lead paint in your house!  They haven’t made any of the Hulk’s rouge’s – but I will wait to see.  These little guys sell pretty well here (they come from over-seas) but I don’t know if they sell well enough for this series to keep going…

By the way, sorry for the crappy pic…
