Infinity War stuff is still pouring out onto the shelves including a brand new Hulkbuster figure! I have every mini-mate Hulkbuster and as cool as this one is nothing has come close to the original figure. You can lift the helmet and see the little Iron Man helmet inside. While they usually give us an extra head now, one that we replace the helmeted head with the regular one.
This offering we don’t even get that – one that I would have loved to see as it was Bruce Banner inside the armor. So while all of the Hulkbuster Mini-Mates are really cool this one doesn’t really live up to its predecessors.
Walgreens continues to offer some decent exclusives. I have picked up the Leader and Bruce Banner in Hulkbuster armor MiniMates set and I have to be honest – it’s pretty dang cool! I don’t recall this Bruce Banner armor from the comics – but I am pretty psyched with it. For one of the greatest Hulk foes to be include in the set makes this even better!
Let’s just say I am a sucker when something features a character directly linked to the Hulk himself – so to see a set with two characters made me downright giddy! Especially to see a classic version of one of the Hulk’s oldest enemies!
I enjoy the MiniMates – the amount of articulation and ability to pose these figures however you want make these little guys perfect to recreate classic covers with. The amount of detail is also pretty impressive considering these guys are about 2″ tall. A great set worth the pick up.
These have been out for a while hanging on the TRU pegs – a slew of Deadpool inspired minimates including the infamous Hulkpool! I think anyone who has been reading this blog for a while would recall I have a special little nickname for this incarnation of Deadpool that expresses my feelings for that character. 10 no points to anyone who can comment below with the name!
A Savage Hulk comes along with Hulkpool – a very decent new head paint – and it’s always good to have a new Hulk. I think it maybe time to post a list of all the Hulk minimates available – because there are A LOT!
Also available is another set with a first appearance Wolverine. He comes with a debut Deadpool – another way of saying “first appearance”. As everyone will remember Wolvie first shows up in the pages of the Hulk and I felt compelled to pick this 2-pack up as well.
I told you this series sold like gangbusters – which it did – but I did not read it – which is true. Mostly… I did read and enjoy Future Imperfect and Planet Hulk. They were both hilarious, exciting and action packed – but, as always, paled in comparison to the original. I tried out Infinity Gauntlet – but could not make it through the first issue – as well as Old Man Logan – but disliked that one. A lot. Even though the original Old Man Logan was both well written and memorable the mini was forgettable and terrible. It did produce this MiniMates set – which features a very Maestro-esque Dystopia Hulk and Wastelands Wolverine.
I am currently working on a MiniMates exclusive post that highlights all the Hulk releases that MiniMates has put out. There are quite a few too… way more than I ever thought there would be! Everything from Classic Hulk and Mr. Fixit to Maestro and Nul. Fan favorites such as World War Hulk to Merged Hulk have all been made – but some of my favorites are, much like this one, a classic Hulk. Walgreen’s has been having a few Marvel exclusives pop up – the ML Agent Venom was pretty awesome – but this, as far as I know, if the first Hulk related one. Under the Avengers Assemble banner we have a Hulk and Captain America set.
I am a bit muddled these days… I ordered a small batch of comics that says it was delivered to my house… yet it was not. Trying to track this down is a little more curiously difficult than it should be! Anyways, I am also working on a few posts looking back on classic stories as well as reviews for the latest issues – but since none of those are done just yet – I will post “The Best of” Mini-Mates, Hulk and Loki 2-pack (2013, $9.99). This is a brand new Hulk Mini-Mate – not that we needed a new one – but it is probably one of the best ones to come out! You can also take the Banner head and turn it into a Bruce Banner Mini-Mate. Make sure, as you transform the little figure that you say lots of things like “You won’t like me when I am angry!” and “Get away!” or “Aaaaauuuurrrggh!” It makes it WAY more exciting!
Professor Hulk and Thor MiniMates
Some of the better Avengers stuff is making its way into the stores. What a great time for Marvel, huh? Avengers is on its way to becoming one of the top three money makers ever – maybe even taking the #1 slot (it still has a LONG way to go to beat it – but who know? I believe it deserves it!). There is two sets of Mini-Mates out right now – first up: Hulk and Iron Man.
Hulk and Iron Man MiniMates
This set has the uglier of the Hulks and Iron Man looks… how should I put this? He looks… meh. Does the helmet come off? I don’t have an open version of this… yet – but it looks like the helmet would come off – especially since it comes with extra hair (with non-green ears) – and when they do that they have to make the helmet just a bit too large and clunky looking.
Now, the expression on the Hulk’s face almost ruins this whole set. Is he curious? What is that face? Confused? Did he just walk in on Cap changing out of his costume? Other than the expression the figure is pretty much the same as all of the other Mini-Mates. Grade for this set: C+
Professor Hulk – a little more image conscious
The other set is Hulk and Thor – of course this is no ordinary Hulk – they gave us another version of the Professor Hulk! I know some Hulk fans are not as big of a fan of this personality – but I am glad we got a new version without the brown jumpsuit! Thor, of course, looks pretty bad ass, and comes with an extra “clean shaven” head. This is the better of the two sets – if you can only get one – get this. Grade: B-
