Next Set of Marvel Masterworks…

MM Incredible Hulk Volume 2

We will continue with the Marvel Masterworks with the next volume of MM – this time they feature the TTA years.  Because the Hulk split the book they can fit 20 issues instead of the regular 10 – although it still figures to be the same.  The real kicker is I cannot find the next volume of TTA anywhere!  But – as you will notice – this is not the same as the cover as yesterday’s.  The green cover and gold foil frame is replaced with just a silver cover – and is not limited.  I will show what I am talking about tomorrow… See you then!

Tales to Astonish #59 (1964)

Tales to Astonish #59 - First Hulk!

Tales to Astonish #59 - First Hulk!

On my trip to New York I entered Midtown Comics and was loving the selection that they had.  Although a bit pricey I was psyched to walk in and find this comic right here… TTA #59!  The beginning of the 2nd Hulk saga!  I have been searching for one – trying not to buy one off ebay.  Great condition and great art by Dick Ayers – this comic ends letting you know that the Hulk will be taking half the TTA every month.  This is a great issue where Giant Man is asking Hulk to join the Avengers – but Hulk says no – the only way Hulk knows how 🙂  I am totally finished with the Hulk comic library now.  I have every regular edition run and now every TTA!  Man, what a good feeling!

Tales to Astonish #60 (1964)

It is widely regarded that the Hulk’s first TTA is the above, #60, but it it also known by many that the Hulk also appeared in TTA #59!  So what is the deal?  Well, the Hulk – after his comic was cancelled – was still a huge part of the comic continuity.  Hulk was actually very popular – but unsure if he could carry his own title he started co-featuring in this little rag above!  But as far as TTA #59 (which I still need to get) Hulk actually fights Giant Man.  Giant Man starred in this book until Namor took over – but it was Hulk that really sold this comic.  And starting with Hulk #102 he had that chance!  And the rest was history!

Tales to Astonish #62 (1964)

This really poor copy of TTA was sitting in my LCS.  This is the origin of the Leader.  Man, what a great series the first TTA was.  Filled with Humanoids – on trains, on islands, a huge humanoid that threatens the army and the Hulk stops them all!  The Leader was supposed to be brilliant but all of his plans were about using more humanoids to try to defeat the Hulk.  When the humanoids fail – he just makes more and tries the same thing again.  What classic stories.

Tales To Astonish…

As the back issue quest continues I have been finding some good luck getting the Tales to Astonish.  I am down to needing just 12 issues to complete the Hulk series.  Of course, most of the ones I need are the oldest and in the 60’s.  But here are a few pictures of the comics I found in Jan.  They are:
TTA saw alot of different artists – including Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers (to name just a few) which means alot of different versions of the Hulk. Worth checking out.

New England Comics – 1/10/08

New England Comics in Quincy was not so Hulk-tastic.  The only back issue they had for me was # 109 (Trimpe).  But some good news… they did have a few Tales to Astonish that I needed.  As many of you know, Hulk’s legacy continued in TTA from issue #59 – #101 until it was re-named The Incredible Hulk.  #67 is one of the issues that I purchased (the Leaping Hulk is drawn by Jack Kirby and is one of my favorite images of all time) I picked up:

Incredible Hulk #109 (Trimpe)

Tales to Astonish:
TTA #67
TTA #76
TTA #83
TTA #87
TTA #89

If you are wondering how many  issues I need to complete the collection here are the stats –

Incredible Hulk Issues Needed – 136 – (Including #’s 1, 2, 4, 180, & 181)

Tales to Astonish Issues Needed – 16

That’s actually not too bad and I think that if I keep up my current rate that I could complete the entire run before I die.  But seriously, the only issue I’m even remotely daunted by would be Incredible Hulk #1.  I know it will be at least a few thousand for a lousy copy – but I am willing wait to see what comes about.

Tales To Astonish (1963-1965)

These are the few Tales to Astonish I have.  I have #91 against the Abomination (#90 is when the Abomination first appeared)  #69 with the Leader.  Tales to Astonish was a shared Hulk book.  See, when Hulk was cancelled after issue 6 in ’62 Marvel gave him this book that he shared with Giant-Man and Sub-Mariner.  My favorite cover here is #77 where Rick Jones is telling Ross the Bruce Banner is the Hulk.  After issue #101 (which is up there) they gave the entire book to the Hulk and renamed it “The Incredible Hulk”.  Kinf of like what they are doing with Vol. 3 issue #112, giving it to Incredible Hercules.  It’s Karma – that’s what it is!
