I’d like to hear some opinions on this – I have my beliefs of what a true variant is – but in the spirit of creating a checklist for the Hulk fans I need your advice. There are certainly variant comics which feature a brand new cover – but I have been faced with a few “variant” comics that I’m not so sure are actually worth posting…
For instance – do you consider the following actual variants?
- Price Changes (for example: TIH #212-216 have a 35 cent variant)
- Reprints (When a comic comes with an action figure – like the ML line)
- Different Language Comics (like the German #181 that is all over ebay)
I mean, I’ve started to add 2nd prints and such – but are these others actually considered variants? Check out what this guy thinks too: http://mysite.verizon.net/psmerolle/35variantlist.htm
Would you bother seeking these out to complete a collection? Or do you consider a collection complete without them? Let me know what you guys think! Thanks! – Ratchet

Coming from the UK I’m in favor of labeling UK pence copies of comics as ‘variants’, because currently there (sometimes) seems to be some stigma against them as lesser versions than their American counterparts. But unless I had every cents copy of the Hulk (I wish) I probably wouldn’t seek out the pence variants. On the other hand, comics like the UK’s ‘Terrific’ and ‘Mighty World of Marvel’ are definitely worth including in any collection, because although they were reprints they often changed dialogue or created new covers which are often quite entertaining (there’s a great MWOM with an orange hulk for example). Some of the continental European reprints are pretty cool too – I have two old French Hulks with fantastically seventies covers…
