A Couple of New Immortal Hulk Variants

CCI05152020_0001 (2)

I found a fantastic deal on a couple of Immortal Hulk variants. The first, above is the Gabrielle Dell Otto variant for issue #2. A dark but amazing looking variant that harkens to the classic Savage Hulk.

The other is the Inhyuk variant to issue #17. This bloody variant is one of the cooler variants that this artist has to offer. If you like the art, boy are you in luck, because this artist has quite a few variants to choose from in this series!

How are the gamma team going to fight against the forces of Roxxon when they have Xemnu able to implant new memories that make everyone love and trust the furry monster!  Even worse, it seems as though Bruce (or Bob, maybe Bobby? Is he okay with Bobby?) has been impacted as well!  In fact Bruce’s whole subconscious, with its influx of Hulk personalities, is in turmoil!  Many of the Hulks are wandering around confused and angry and others are completely trapped!  The Devil Hulk is chained up and beaten while human Joe Fixit is encased in amber.  Meanwhile, little Banner is watching T.V. being entranced by the memories Xemnu implanted.

It’s up to the World Breaker to convince the Savage Hulk to release the rage and smash the T.V.  Looking through the damage the Hulk can see a light at the end of a tunnel.  Making his way to the light the Hulk once again comes ripping out of Bruce Banner’s physical being!  I say once again because this happened in Hulk’s history back in The Incredible Hulk #372.  I sort of wish Ewing just allowed for this moment to happen and not address the fact that it’s a nod to previous continuity thus rewarding the Hulk fanatics who know the  history of the Hulk.

CCI03262020_0001 (2)

Now that the real Hulk is released he immediately goes on the attack!  McGowan sends them to Roxxon headquarters where we see the products of Xemnu’s appetite.  Each person he has consumed has been altered to mindless, mouth-less fighting creatures.  Even Minotaur is horrified to realize that this is what has been happening to his staff!  Even worse, Minotaur realizes that when you do business with monsters you hire nightmares that you can’t control.  Xemnu, still hungry, consumes Minotaur.

CCI03262020_0002 (2)

Hulk makes his way through the wreckage ready to take Minotaur down when he comes face to face with what his enemy has become!  A skin-less, mouthless thing pleading for help with his eyes.  Shocked and taken aback by what he sees Xemnu takes the Hulk by surprise and tries to get into the mind of our jade hero!  Rick Jones tells Xemnu he’s making a mistake but the furry creature doesn’t listen until it’s too late!  He sees the World Breaker come raging out and the strongest version of the Hulk obliterates Xemnu with one punch!

CCI03262020_0003 (2)

Destroying Xemnu also severs the hold he had over people’s minds.  Savage Hulk seemed to black out and can’t remember how he beat Xemnu but Rick tells him not to worry, that he saved the day, as usual.  He sends Hulk away to help out the rest of the crew and we suddenly learn that Rick is not who he says he is.  He tells the Minotaur that he may have use for him so he won’t put him out of his misery and that he will handle the Hulk.  You see, Rick is just the shell with the mind of the Leader inside!

The influence of Xemnu is affecting everyone’s perception of the Hulk.  Eveyyone but the Hulk… and Dr. McGowan who is figuring it all out.  The only problem there is lands on the fact that Xemnu is still a monster who feasts on humans.  Even the Minotaur’s most dedicated people aren’t above getting sacrificed to the hunger of the original Hulk!

CCI03132020_0001 (2)

Unfortunately, Banner is getting affecting by Xemnu’s influence and is growing stronger!  His ability to keep the Savage Hulk at bay is even astounding to the green goliath himself.  Unsure of what to do exactly, Rick Jones just notes that Bruce doesn’t sound like Bruce.  In fact, Bruce questions why people would call him that when his name is Robert.

Meanwhile McGowan, putting 2+2 together, realizes just how much Xemnu is directing the narrative.  Even affecting everyone’s memories.  With a commotion in the next room both Samson and McGowan reach the bathroom where Banner has smashed the mirror to stop the Hulk from talking to him.  Deep inside Banner’s subconscious the Hulk is spouting off, unable to control the body, until a shadowy figure makes his way to the front, unveiling the World Breaker!

Incredible Hulk #750!?

CCI03232020_0003 (2)

What makes me more confused than anything else is the way that Marvel handles the numbering of their series.  They want to benefit from the re-numbering, and the sales bump that comes with it, but they also want to keep up with DC’s original numbering when they have a celebratory milestone.

With Wonder Woman reaching the #750 Marvel felt a little left out and tried to think of which series they could inflate the numbers with and celebrate a phony milestone with.  It turns out, 11 years after they celebrated #600, they decided to release a Hulk #750.  This time they didn’t even bother trying to show everyone a collection of covers to try and excuse the celebration.

CCI03232020_0001 (2)

This is because the numbering really makes no sense at all!  If the Hulk reached #600 11 years ago and they released an issue a month that would be 132 issues.  I do know that since the Immortal Hulk became a huge seller they began releasing the series bi-monthly but with the Immortal Hulk hitting issue #33 the numbers just don’t add up!

CCI03232020_0004 (2)

Not to mention, they won’t be continuing the legacy numbering.  The next issue released will be #34.  This proves that this issue is, if nothing else, a weak attempt to celebrate a milestone issue.  Of course, they released 4 cover price variants, a 1:25 variant, a 1:100 variant, a 1:200 variant and even a 1:500 variant.  I chose not to go for the higher priced variants and stuck with just the variants up to 1:100.

Dr. McGowan has a storied pass.  The more we discover the more we should not be shocked.  Before Shadow Base apparently McGown worked for Kingpin with a patient named Glowboy.  He’s exactly as he sounds.  Working in the seedy underground, it’s only a matter of time before Daredevil shows up.  Now McGowan works with (for) the Hulk at a moment when  monsters have suddenly infiltrated the city!

This is due to Roxxon – but you guys already knew that – now the original Hulk, Xemnu, has come to save the day.  Only, Hulk can see through the facade and attacks the white, hairy beast, all in full view of the television cameras, making the Hulk look like the bad guy!  While Hulk attacks Xemnu starts losing his control ver the creatures and reminds the people watching of what a “good guy” he is!  The Absorbing Man comes to the rescue of Xemnu, who also thinks he remembers the beast from his childhood – obviously under a spell – but luckily Hulk’s team teleports him away before he could rip anymore limbs off of Xemnu.

CCI03012020_0002 (2)

McGowan takes him back to Shadow Base and helps him regain control.  Devil Hulk reamerges astonished that the Savage Hulk could remain in the driver’s seat for so long, even stopping him from taking over.  The Devil Hulk gets spooked watching the scene unfold on television when he gets transfixed by those big, hypnotic eyes of Xemnu.
