Hulk: Let the Battle Begin (2010) – The Review

Hulk: Let the Battle Begin

This was an interesting one-shot. A literal – almost – day in the life of the Hulk! I think it’s Dee Snider’s son who writes this – and Dee Snider is a freakin’ bad-ass – so the fact that his son wrote a Hulk comic only makes another notch in his awesome category for me! So – the story kind of goes like this: Banner wakes up after one of the Hulk’s rampages. He doesn’t remember much – but he has a little pouch sewn in his purple pants with everything he needs to help him try to get things back to normal without being noticed too much – like a cash card. I have a bit of an issue with this – much like in the movie – Banner would know that using a cash card would create a trail for the army to find him – he’s too smart to make a stupid mistake like that! He should’ve just had cash in the pouch – but, we move on…

Hulk taking on the Wrecking Crew!

Banner says Betty was the one who gave him the idea for the pouch – not only that – but she was the first to sew it into his pants.  He also says he doesn’t remember much from his Hulk episodes.  He remembers bits and pieces.  That’s what we get – bits and pieces – we know that the Hulk faced off against a group called the Wrecking Crew – and that they were at Mt. Rushmore destroying the President’s faces for ransom.  The Hulk fought these jokers – but Thor shows up and tries to stop the Hulk as well…

Thor shows up to spoil the fun...

Bruce finds a fan in the motel clerk.  The man says he loves the Hulk – and not to worry because he won’t say a word about where Bruce.  But Bruce soon realizes this was a lie – but first we see how the Hulk beat Thor – which is my favorite part of the comic.  The Hulk grabs Thor’s hammer – while Thor is still holding it – and uses it to smash Thor’s face in!  It’s the ultimate “Stop hitting yourself” grade school bullying technique!  But anyways, Ross shows up at a diner, with a whole slew of tanks, helicopters, and soldiers, where Bruce is grabbing a bite.  Ross demands Bruce surrender – and Bruce gives him an ultimatum.  Let him go or suffer the Hulk’s wrath.  Ross chooses to take his chances – and the Hulk destroys everything.  So much so – he wakes up without his trusty old Purple pants – as they burned up.

Thor gets in a lucky shot!

I thought the ending was pretty funny – and actually pretty clever – I liked the whole issue.  I wasn’t a big fan of the art though… I thought that the art really lacked any kind of “wow” factor – especially since it had a great Hulk/Thor fight.  But, all in all, an enjoyable issue worth picking up.  The comic also contains the MCP: Hulk vs the Entire Universe, drawn by McG.  A solid, sort of “else world” tale about a planet of Hulks.  Check it out.  Grade: C+

Hulk Ear Phones (2010)

Hulk Ear Phones

Hulk ear phones?  There is nothing more than I want than tiny little Hulks shoved in my ears!  These are perfect!  I found these at my Newbury Comics – in a whole row of freakin Spiderman ear phones… man, that damn Spiderman is EVERYWHERE!  So, I will be reviewing the Hulk: Let the Battle Begin one-shot that was released this week on Monday.  I have to – because if I wait then the Hulk comics will back up on me and then I will get overwhelmed and I will curl up in my tub and cry myself into a coma… like I did last time…  Anyways, I will see you next week.  I’m pretty excited – I’m picking up my Maestro this weekend – hopefully I will also post him – but let’s not get hysterical… it took me almost 3 months to post the Grey Hulk statue…

How Sick Is This?

I have been updating the COMICS 1 Page – and in doing so totaled up the # of covers in the Hulk series… get ready for this – there are 65 different covers – and only 20 freakin’ issues! 65 COVERS! And of you try to collect them all – well, that’s a small freakin’ fortune! And yes, I am trying to collect them all…

Bowen Design’s Retro Grey Hulk (2009)

Grey Hulk Statue!
Complete pic of the masterpiece!

Bowen really has gone all out with this latest crop of Hulk releases. This is certainly different enough from the Green Hulk piece to comment on – I mean, the earlier Hulk releases have just been re-paints – but here Randy has done something truly fantastic! Each sculpt has tweaks that make each statue being released different!  For instance – with this statue you can see that Randy had flattened the head – added a yellow shirt and gave the Hulk an awe-inspiring desert scene base that totally rocks!

One Foot!
Holy Crap! Look out for the cactus!

Sure, the basic sculpt is the same – but this is a classic statue that will surely rock!  And there is no paint flaws like the Green Hulk statue seemed to have.  I have had this bad boy for a while now – set up with the Green Hulk – and I can’t believe how awesome it looks.  Every time I see it I think to myself how amazing accurate it is to the original incarnation to the Hulk.  The Hulk has changed so much over the years – but the original was something that no one has successfully captured – until now!

"...and your back! It's worse than your front!"

I have to admit I was skeptical at first when BD announced the release of multiple Hulk statues – but now, I couldn’t be happier he did!  I have Maestro on the way – and Planet Hulk will eventually get shipped – but all in all – thank you Mr. Bowen for the new crop of Hulks!  I should just enjoy these – but I can’t help but hunger for a Fixit, a Merged Hulk, and maybe some others!  Like, The End: Hulk and War Hulk – or even a WWH!  I need to save up for the next crop of Hulks already!  Not that they are definitely happening – but I have faith!

Green and Grey - Side by Side!

Mego Hulk Van (1979)

I think it’s funny that the head honchos at Mego thought it would be a good idea to put the Hulk behind the wheel of his very own Hulk Van – so not only is he a menace to other drivers – he’s also really vain about it!  I mean, sure, if the Hulk wants to drive – by all means – but really?  Does the Hulk have a desire to tear up the roads in a mini-van?  If anything why not give him a Ferrari?

Hulk Van!

What is he going to do – give the other superheroes a lift?  Look, I had a mini-van when I was in high school – I inherited it from my parents.  I loved it – but I was also the one who always did all the driving, mainly because all of my friends could just pile right into the back and party while I had to try to concentrate on the driving with screaming maniacs behind me.  That’s all good and fine – but I’m telling you – that van became a curse!

The Back Side

Maybe I would have liked the van better if I had my name scrolled across the top… something to think about in the future…  I kind of wish they made a vehicle for the 12″ figures they put out – but hey, Hulk doesn’t really need a van since most of the time he jumps from place to place.  Mine is in beautiful – but incomplete – condition.  It’s missing the accessories, like the sliding door and the back bumper – but maybe I will find those pieces in the future.  Now, I know of a Hulk Helicopter that is out there – and while I don’t have one yet… I am always on the hunt for one.

A Grail for any Hulk Fan!

Savage She Hulks #1 (2010)

Savage She Hulks #1

So, Thundra’s first meeting with her daughter does not go very well – as Lyra not only hates her mother but is ready to kill her.  Within the battle Lyra starts to tell Thundra what happened to her – but she refuses to listen, as it may destroy the future.  Thundra tries to tell Lyra that she can’t explain why she has teamed up with the Red Hulk – and as another battle is about to ensue, Lyra loses her strength and Thundra throws her through a mountain.  Always watching, the Leader and M.O.D.O.C.K. send the Wizard out to recruit her into the Frightful Four.

Lyra gets a spanking!

Lyra is trying to blend into society – but the Wizard comes to make sure that isn’t possible.  Lyra begins to battle the Wizard’s team – and is doing well until the Red She Hulk comes and, well… against the Red She Hulk, Lyra doesn’t fare very well.  She is ready to kill Lyra before Wizard steps back in and tames her – tells her that they are trying to recruit her – not kill her.  Wizard makes Lyra another offer to join his team – and she agrees, with her own intentions.

Red She Hulk congratulating Lyra on her winning....

After the attack on the Baxter Building and the kidnapping of Reed Rickards Lyra is granted access onto the “Hellcarrier” – the destroyed Hellacarrier from issue #2 of the Hulk, that the Intelligencia is using as a base.  Lyra does some investigating and finds Jen Walters in a suspended animation pod.

Original She Hulk - in the tube Luke Skywalker used in Empire...

Wow – this whole storyline is getting REAL interesting!  Thanks, mainly, I think, to Parker and Pak who came on board to clean up Loeb’s mess.  They’ve made all these characters interesting!  Even the horribly conceived Red She Hulk!  The fantastic art really helps as well!  By the way, there is a variant cover – which my LCS did not get in.  Second time they forced me to get it off ebay.  It will be here in a few days – which reminds me… I need to make an announcement of sorts.  Maybe I will make a new post to do that though… but about the issue – Kudos! – I can’t wait for the next issue! Grade: A-
