Hulk #10 (2009) – The Review

Hulk #10
Hulk #10

I’ll begin with the review – just saying what happened – then I’ll tell you what I think afterward…

We start with Hulk with his beloved Jarella.  They are happy and getting married – until a hand comes out of the heavens saying “Jarella, you are needed elsewhere” and snatches Jarella.  The Hulk tries to fight but is just taken out of K’ai.  We then join the Hulk standing in the desert with The Grandmaster.  He asks Hulk if he would like to see Jarella.  He says Jarella is dead.  The Grandmaster replies “No kidding, Captain Obvious” – just kidding – he actually tells the Hulk if he picks a team and participates in a game – to the death – and wins, then he can have his precious Jarella back.  Hulk says he knows who to ask.

We join The Silver Surfer as he tells Shalla-Bal that he has spared the planet – but now must go work for Galactus and leave her.  The Hulk shows up and asks the Surfer for help.  The Surfer has no idea who the Hulk is – because they haven’t met yet – and Galactus calls for his herald.  Galactus realizes there is an Elder at work behind Hulk’s appearance.  He grants the Surfer 24 hours to leave and deal with this.  Next, we find Namor on his wedding day (do you see where this is going?) with his wife Lady Dorma who has already died and the Surfer asks Namor for his help.  Lastly, we join Strange – in another universe – as his love Clea is taken away as well.

When Hulk’s team is finally joined together they are faced with the Grandmaster who lets them know that each of the heroes are from a different time and then introduces his brother – The Collector – who asks if his brother is ready.  He claims he has his own team with the other Hulk.  Hulk screams “What other Hulk!?!” And we see the Red Hulk with his team “The Offenders” consisting of Tiger Shark, Baron Mordo, and Terrax.

The Grandmaster tells his brother there is just one more thing – and he gives the Hulk the brain of Bruce Banner who claims “Now we can fight smart and hard – to the death!”

So, here’s my thoughts… first off – the idea is pretty cool – the execution is terrible.  If Jarella is stolen out of continuity then she’s not there to get killed later – so how is she dead?  Also, Banner Hulk is widely known as one of the weakest Hulks – not the best fighter.  Banner is smart – brilliant in fact, but he doesn’t have a strategic mind – he’s not a brilliant fighter!  So why does he have Banner’s brain?  Oh that’s right – because it’s one of the Hulk’s personalities that Loeb hasn’t ruined yet.  I swear – these could be great stories – but the actual comic is so badly written and plotted terribly that you struggle just to get through each page – and that’s pretty bad when it only takes about 2 minutes to read the whole thing!  McGuinness still makes pretty pictures – but even that is wearing thin… C-

Grey Transformation Statue (1998)

Classic Yellow Shirt? Check!
Classic Yellow Shirt? Check!

This is more like a diorama rather than just a statue.  Showing Banner slowly turn into Hulk.  I have the green version of this statue – it was actually the very first statue I ever bought… on layaway.  When I actually got to take it home it was already worthless. 🙂  I have no worries though – it’s not like I would try to sell it anyways.  But now, onto this statue.  Sometimes ebay actually has a good deal or two – and this was one of those times.

I saw this auction starting at $24.99 – and I waited… no one seemed to be bidding.  I waited the auction down to the last few minutes and finally set in my higest bid – at $25.00.  That’s right, I wasn’t going two pennies over the starting price.  Luckily, no one else was either.  Most people wouldn’t bother with this statue – and I agree that there are much better representations of the Hulk, but this staue is unique.  It’s one of the only ones that show the transformation – and it has sentimental value to me 🙂 They made 250 of these and mine is #213.

Stealing from a discount bin? Not cool...
Stealing from a discount bin? Not cool...

The kids costume is fine.  I love when kids dress up like the Hulk – except… why is the sides of his head blue?  And what is he grabbing for down there – geez kid, have a little dignity!  Oh, wait, is he trying to steal something?  Oh, in that case – it’s totally fine.

And before the letters start pouring in – I was kidding.  Stealing is not cool and I don’t condone it.  Unless it’s government secrets…

Hulk Movie Regener8r’s 3 (2008)

Movie Regener8r's
Movie Regener8r's

I just looked back and realized I never showed you the other Regener8r’s I picked up.  This makes 3 – the 2 others I posted back in January.  The image on the bottom of the car is one of the coolest images – mainly because it’s based on Deodato Jr.’s cover from Incredible Hulk #60.  That’s one of the covers I would totally pay thousands for and never look back!  Alright, now, this weekend extra specially Hulky!  Man, that sounds so gay… but it was.  I picked up the new BD Abomination statue – also the kit I had painted up finally came in – I am psyched!  Tomorrow I have some pics from around the net – but I will be posting one of the new statues that I purchased on Wednesday.  I will have to decide which one – but I will say this – if you have a preference leave a comment below.  I’m not saying it will change my mind on which one to show – it’s just interesting to hear what people like to look at.

Sherry Leak Commission (2009)

Sherry Leak Commission
Sherry Leak Commission

I found this artist off this website: http://comicartcommissions.com/ Her name is Sherry Leak.  She has a real manga feel to her art – and while a very different take on the Hulk – I really like it!  I asked for her to have Hulk vs. Valkyrie piece – and that is what she delivered – although that’s the most interesting attack pose for Valkyrie to take… is she flying?  Is she standing on the wall?  All I know is I was pleased with this piece.  Sherry was a wonderful artist to work with and I wish her lots of luck in the future!

Have a great weekend – although I have been mucho busy lately I am posting pretty regularly – even though I’ve missed a few days.  The sad truth is… I have shown a great percentage of the collection.  Now, I didn’t say all – and I am still getting Hulk stuff from day to day – but most of the collection has been shown.  I do have a few big pieces to show you – I also will be picking up my Bowen Abomination statue this weekend – and my new passion is for collecting some original artwork – but truth be told – I’m not sure how much longer I will be able to post new things day to day.  That being said, I will make sure I post every time I have something new and plan on keeping this site up and running for a while, mainly because since I have started this site I have talked to, met, or just plain ogled over many of Hulk collectors out there.  We are a really great, and loyal and very helpful group of people – the people I have met.  I’ve enjoyed speaking with the many people I have met and look forward to continue meeting all sorts of people who visit my site.  I think I’m just rambling now, so… goodnight – have a good weekend – I will be back on Monday, and as always, thanks for visiting the site.

Incredible Hulk: Heart of the Atom HC (2008)

Hulk: Heart of the Atom Hard Cover
Hulk: Heart of the Atom Hard Cover

I bought this so long ago – but instead of posting it I was reading it.  I have a quick side note here: I paid $29.99 for this HC beauty – to me it’s totally worth it – and today I finally found Hulk Visionaries: Peter David, Volume 6 and I paid… $29.99!  If it was full price I would have been really pissed!  Every Visionaries has been $19.99 – a perfect price for what you are getting – and now they’ve jumped to $30!  That’s a little much!  Oh, Marvel… you are going to price your long time fans out of this little hobby…

Anyways, I really have no complaints about this collection.  If you were to read straight through the Hulk’s library the story of Jarella, you would find, is sprinkled sporadically throughout the series.  The first appearance of the Hulk’s green lady is #140 (The issue preceding the first appearance of Doc Samson) and then we didn’t hear from that character again for 8 issues – from there it was another 8 issues till we had to wait almost 50 issues to see the jade beauty!  It was so interesting reading through this storyline – mainly because the first story was plotted out and drawn by a different creative team then the second half of this story.  The first few stories were drawn by Herb Trimpe while the second half was drawn by Sal Buscema.

Without giving too much away – because this is one that you should pick up for yourselves – it collects 12 issues from #140 – #248 and What If…? #23.  We join the Hulk as a classic Hulk villain, Psyklops, is using a ray to shrink the Hulk – to smaller than an atom – onto a world where he battles strange creatures and is welcomed by a race of green people and their leader – Queen Jarella – who immediately takes the Hulk as the King of their land.  But things don’t stay peaches and cream for long – Visis, Jarella’s Brother, wants the throne for himself.  By the way, magicians have not only cast a spell so that Hulk can understand and speak their language but also have the mind of Bruce Banner.  It’s one of the most interesting points of the series.  The different dynamic of seeing Jarella deal with the Hulk’s different incarnations – Hulk with Banner’s brain, Bruce Banner, Hulk with Hulk’s brain, in a rage/happy.  It was such a treat to read this whole run – although it did remind me of Planet Hulk… a lot.

There were a lot of similarities to the PH storyline, such as: Hulk has to fight on a strange land, Hulk is made King, Hulk has a love – but all in all there are enough differences that both stories stand on their own amazingly.  There were a few different times that Hulk was shrunk – once by a very jealous and enraged Glen Talbot, who blamed the Hulk for his making his marriage to Betty dissolve.  But, as most Hulk fans know, Jarella dies.  Very tragically and very heroically.  The Hulk goes back to K’ai (Jarella’s home world) once more – in one of the best stories of the whole book – to bury Jarella’s body.  He fights one of the coolest villains with the stupidest names – The Gardener.  I told you the name was stupid – but he can control the plants, water, and animals.

The biggest treat of this collection is that  they added the What If…? #23 where the Watcher asks “What if Jarella never died?”  We get a great story – but also discover the mysterious villain who had sent Crypto Man from issue #205.  I can’t recommend getting this trade enough – in fact log onto amazon.com and find a copy for yourself right away!  The only thing missing is the issues that Peter David wrote where the Grey Hulk travelled to K’ai – but I have those issues already reprinted in Hulk Visionaries: Peter David Volume 3.

New York Comic Con Pics!

Let me put it out there first… I was not there – I couldn’t make it.  But I have seen a few pics thanks to statueforum.com and statuemarvels.com that I thought I’d show – mainly just Hulk stuff that we can look forward to.  So, let’s get started:
Mighty Muggs Custon Hulk
Mighty Muggs Custom Hulk

Here’s a custom Mighty Muggs Hulk – I hate to say it but I don’t think MM would’ve been a hit if this is how they looked.  Obviously this guy has a darker – more realistic paint job and loooooonger legs.  I like the idea of the ripped shirt and the expression on his face is priceless – but all in all – I’ll keep my original.  Here’s a custom Cyclops with a Fruit Roll- Up sticking out of his visor:

What looks like a few two packs including Skaar and Ru… Ru… I just can’t even say it anymore.  Ugh.  Let’s just call him the Crimson Fool!  Lastly, I have a couple pics of a Hulk costume – I was going to make a new Ummm… post for this, because it fits in perfectly, but I just thought I’d slip it in here at the end – hope it doesn’t cause anyone nightmares:

Marvel Heroes Figures and Stickers (2008)

Sorry it is blurry - these guys were a pain to photograph
Sorry it is blurry - these guys were a pain to photograph

When these first appeared on the shelves I was pretty certain I would be able to easily identify which packages contained the Hulk.  Well, I was wrong.  Really, really wrong.  About 30 packs later I had a ton of figures – none of them Hulk and more and more frustration.  I kept picking up Daredevils because he’s HUGE!  Not to mention way out of scale with all the other heroes.  Check it out:

Why is DD so frickin big?
Why is DD so frickin big?

Don’t be fooled by DD crouching – he’s almost as tall as the other heroes and isn’t standing up straight!  Spiderman is a dwarf compared to DD – and since when is Wolvie taller then ANY of the other heroes?  Yeah, the scale is way off on these characters.  I had almost every character except for the Hulk when I decided to not spend any more money on this line.  But obviously I did not stop – because I am both dedicated and a sucker – but I didn’t pick up another package.  Instead I found these boxes at Target the other day.  I decided to try my hand at finding a Hulk one more time.

The Golden Ticket
The Golden Ticket

I picked up 2 boxes – each box comes with a 2 figures and about 52 cards – this was the last attempt at getting a Hulk.  Amazingly, this had to be my lucky day, I ended up with 2 Hulk figures!  Sorry Hulk fans – the other one is already spoken for by our ever lovin’ JG!  He’ll be shipping out this week for ya!

The bases are all pretty much the same – except the Surfer and the Goblin – they actually use their modes of transportation as the base – which is sweet!  Lastly, the card set (which I almost have them all – hoping to complete the set through a series of trades)  is full of Hulky goodness!  One point of contention – No grey Hulk stickers!  What is up with that?  He’s like the dirty little secret Marvel tries to ignore most of the time!

Here’s a few more pics – including all the figures except Invisible Woman – and a shot at Hulk’s backside – a blurry one because it wouldn’t come out – but notice it looks as though the Hulk is showing a little crack?  Anyways – here you go…

Wamester Commission #3 (2009)

Wamester Commission #3 - and my personal favorite!
Wamester Commission #3 - and my personal favorite!

I can’t say enough nice things about Jeff Wamester.  His work is beautiful, professional – always jaw dropping – and he’s very quick!  So, here’s an announcement/hulk collection piece.  See, there’s a story behind this piece.  First off, look at the Hulk – the figures that are in front of him.  If you can make it out – it is a woman holding a child and the Hulk is protecting them from a missile that one of the fighter jets dropped.  I mean, it may take a minute, but just look at this piece.  The jets are at the top, flying off, leaving trails of smoke behind them.  The Hulk is standing there – and if you look at his back you can tell a missile has just exploded – right at the top of his back.  Sometimes I hate scans of the work because in person you’d see the amazing detail that Jeff put into this piece!  I love art work that tells a story.  But there’s an obvious other story to tell here…

That’s right, my wife and I are having a hulkling of our very own.  Yes, it’s our first – and it may be our only because my wife is sick 24/7!  But when my wife told me there was a chance she was pregnant I immediately contacted Jeff about drawing something up for me to commemorate this moment.  I also contacted one other artist – who just told me that the commission is on it’s way.  Each piece is so different and I can’t wait to get them up in the nursery.  I don’t know what I am having yet – but I will let you know 🙂 – One more thing – one of the colorists that enjoy Wamester’s work saw this piece and asked if he could color it up.  I don’t remember the name – sorry – if Jeff reads this and wants to leave his name in the comments – please do – but it’s a really, really decent colorization:

It's called a Baby Boom!
It's called a Baby Boom!

Not sure what the woman and child are glowing – but I really like the way the backround is blurry and the light is shooting out everywhere.  There a lot of undiscovered talented guys out there – Wamester is certainly one!  I will have to get a hold of Jade Giant because I know he has 2 killer pieces that you guys would just LOVE!

X-Men vs. Hulk 1-Shot (2009) – The Review

X-Men vs. Hulk 1-Shot
X-Men vs. Hulk 1-Shot

Now keep in mind – I’m a huge fan of great storytelling – I really like Claremont – and I’m not opposed to seeing the Hulk actually get beaten in a fight – in fact, if written well – I would love to see it!  But this is not the case with the comic book right here.  Let’s begin, shall we?

Alright, first off we have Storm and Night Crawler asking Logan if it’s a good idea to test the newbies against the Hulk.  The answer, of course, is no – but we join Colossus enjoying a nature walk and… drawing bears.  Drawing bears?  Yeah – drawing bears.  Soon, Kitty Pride and Lockheed join him.  Out of nowhere the Hulk jumps down, ready to fight.  Colossus and the Hulk trade a few blows – Col. mentions how shocked he is that the Hulk isn’t even phased by his hits.  Hulk tosses Col. and Kitty comes to his rescue.  Hulk says he won’t fight a girl – but then Lockheed comes and breathes fire all over the Hulk – and the last time I checked – fire really doesn’t affect the Hulk – let’s remember, even on Sakaar – a weakened Hulk, mind you, jumped into Liquid Magma – but Lockheed’s fire makes the Hulk scream like a little b!tch.

Hulk swats away the little dragon and jumps off.  Kitty cries about Lockheed and Col. goes to find the Hulk.  When he does find him the Hulk is sitting by the edge of a river.  Col. stupidly thinks he can beat the Hulk at this moment.  They fight again and Col. tosses the Hulk by his feet into the side of a mountain.  Col. thinks he knocked the Hulk out – but at the last moment the Hulk jumps up and knocks the Col. into… ready?  Quicksand.  Quicksand?  Yes, Quicksand.  Apparently we’ve been transported into a bad Threes Company episode.  Hulk waits till Col. goes totally under and then pulls him out.  They make up – and Banner goes on his way.  After rejoining Storm, Logan and Nightcrawler, Logan lets them know it was a test – and Col. knocks Wolverine to the ground with one punch.

So, what did I think?  I think the art was terrible.  I can’t pick out a page that I even remotely liked.  The story was pretty silly and kind of a waste.  Grade: D+ And before you ask – the D+ is because they also reprint X-Men #66 in the back – which is awesome!  I hadn’t read it before – great story.

Hulk Head Bank (1991)

1991 Hulk Head Bank
1991 Hulk Head Bank

I should never promise to post something – because when I don’t deliver I look like a liar… I said that I would post my review of Hulk vs. X-Men 1-Shot today – but that will have to wait – I was working today came home to rip up the carpet in the Hulk room.  Everything is in total disarray and it’s a mess.  But I had this little guy to show you for a while – the pics were in my computer already so…

Hulk Head - Spock Eyebrows...
Hulk Head - Spock Eyebrows...

I have seen this bank in a few different collections – and much like when I see a delicious sandwich – I knew I had to have it!  I searched ebay for months for an affordable one but didn’t come across anything for a while.  Quick side note:  Ebay is REALLY slow right now – so go there for deals – alright, back to the bank.  Released in 1991 by Hamilton Gifts this Hulk head has a slot at the top to slip all the coins inside – but look at that face!

Such a serious look on his face...
Such a serious look on his face...

It reminds me of Kirby’s original Hulk – large brow and flat head.  I love this bank!  It has a classic look – and any Hulk fans out there that doesn’t have this needs to get one.  Especially since this year we will pretty much be Hulk deprived this year.  We have a few Hulk items coming out – but nothing like 2008 – in which us Hulk fans got spoiled!  But hey, oh well…

So, yeah – I will post that review this week – but I guess it’s not really a rush since we are not going to see the Hulk comic this month…

Hulk Child Costume (2008)

Hulk Child's Costume
Hulk Child's Costume

I probably wouldn’t have picked this up except that it was on clearance – and it’s packaged pretty cool.  The mask is pretty sweet and it’s displayed pretty nicely in it’s package – so, why not right?  I have yet to pick up the 70’s Hulk costumes – they are on the list of course – but hey… the list is pretty long.  This, I can honestly say, would have never been on the list except that – like I said – it was cheap.

If you’ll notice I only posted 3 times last week – but that’s mainly because the Hulk room has a flood.  Luckily none of the Hulky goodness was destroyed but it’s still a mess.  I am still not done cleaning it up – the whole rug has to be replaced – but I didn’t want everyone to think I was ignoring them.  I will post my review of the Hulk vs. X-Men 1-shot tomorrow – so tune in!
