Incredible Hulk #159 (1971)

hulk159

I’m really gald they decided to put the Abomination in the new movie.  Each and every issue with the Abomination is entertaining.  Yes, I’m still waiting for 2 issues.  I’ve been waiting for them for a while and keep emailing the sellers who say that the comics are still coming.  I hope so – I already had to deal with a deadbeat seller on ebay – I don’t want to have to do it again.  Lucky for me this issue was obtained by my friend Bill who mailed it to me along with #122 vs. the Fantastic Four.  I will have to post that cover later.

There is another cover with the words The Incredible Hulk At Bay at the top.  I believe it is #171 and it also features the Abomination.  I am still catching up on old back issue reading – so I’m not sure what went on in this comic.  I’ll review it maybe sometime in the future…

Hulk #11 (1978)

With the sucess of the Hulk T.V. show in the 70’s they released a magazine called the Ravaging Hulk – later changed to just “Hulk”.  The magazine reprinted old comic stories so there was nothing new there – but it was the covers that really caught people’s attention.  They were usually painted, beautiful and always exciting to look at.  This is Hulk #11 where it looks as though Hulk was rejected to ride the roller coaster – and then decided since he can’t ride it – no one will.  Hulk, always the party pooper.

Incredible Hulk #162 (1973)

Incredible Hulk #162 - Wendigo\'s crotch is awful shadowy.

WordPress is really messing with me right now… they have totally changed the way to make a post – it was harder than it was before – and this is coming from someone who knows nothing about computers!

Anyways, Incredible Hulk #162 is the first appearence of Wendigo.  This sets up the later appearence introducing Wolverine pretty nicely.  You find out all about how the Wedigo curse is laid upon anyone who gets lost in the woods and eats their friends.  It’s true.  Which if that was true for real life – the movie Alive would’ve been totally different.  Better even.  Hulk actually tries to help Wendigo in this issue (by the way, it shows him talking pretty eloquently on the cover, well, he doesn’t actually say anything but his own name in the comic)  Still, a pretty sad story that Hulk ends up realizing that, even with all of his strength, he can’t always help people, even though he may want to.  This also sets up the identity of the person Wendigo is and makes #180 & #181 even more devastating.

I love Trimpe’s artwork, but the Wendigo does look pretty bad with that tail – and the shadowy crotch area is distracting…

Abomination Bust (2005)

My friend Corry thinks this bust looks like a fish-man.  I can see that.  I think, while still a great sculpt, the face is too thin.  Abomination should be bigger and more devestating looking!  Real messed up.  This is #574 out of 2000.

The Abomination has had it the toughest in comics as far as major villans go…  First, he is just as big – and stronger than the Hulk – but still could never beat him.  To make matters worse – in one paticular fight Hulk threw toxic waste on him and made him uglier.  His wife left him – not wanting to be with a monster.  The only real evil thing the Abomination did was kill Betty Banner.  Hulk beat the living heck out of him for that – and then put him into a room and tortured him by replaying a video of him and his wife.

Bowen is a master at sculpting beautiful pieces.  Even though this sculpt may not be the most perfect representation – it still is the best out there.  Bowen is planning on releasing a Full Statue this year.  I have seen some sneak peeks and it looks amazing.  Can’t wait to add it to the collection.

Incredible Hulk #113 (1969)

So, here’s the story, I bought #113 off ebay from a pretty reputable seller.  But the comic never came.  I emailed – but every one was with no response.  I had to even file a claim with Paypal.  It was really disheartening.  As I was trying to collect every comic this little hurdle was quite surprising and unexpected.

I had a few friends helping me track issues down.  My friend Corry was able to find quite a few issues for me.  My other friend Bill got a couple as well – but it was Bill who called practically every comic shop in Connecticut – he called 27 comic shops all with disappointing results.  Most of the other comic shops laughed at the idea of having back issues that old.  Some mistook Bill’s request for #113 from 1969 as the recent Incredible Hulk – which is actually Incredible Hercules – when Bill asked the price and they informed him $2.99 Bill replied “Yeah, I don’t think we’re talking about the same book here.”

It was the 28th comic shop called Monkeyhead Comics on 273 Greenwood Ave. in Bethel, CT that had the right comic.  The owner was very accommodating and willing to ship the comic out so that I didn’t have to make the 4+ hour trip.  The copy was very well graded and was shipped a lot faster than the man said it would be.  He promised to ship it out on Monday – instead I received it on Monday.

All around a great transaction and a great comic.  While I have bought every issue – I still do not have every comic in my hand yet – so I’m still waiting for 3 comics to arrive.  I will post it when I do.  But anyone looking for Silver age to present comics – statues – trade paperbacks – anything!  Just look up Monkeyhead comics in Bethel, CT and you can call at (203) 743-4123

TV Time ’79 (1979)

As I was strolling the antique store this weekend you can imagine my shock when I saw this book featuring the TV line up for 1979!  And look who’s gracing the cover!  Inside the author chats up Lou Ferigno and Lou tells him all about being a young little weakling to growing up and being big enough to be cast as the Incredible Hulk.  The best part of this book may be where they interview Kristy McNichols – or whatever her name is – this book is like a VH1 special without the interesting parts.

And yes, that is my kitty’s paws who didn’t want to let me take pictures without him this night.

Water Rescue Hulk (2006)

Because I have friends in high places (stock boy at Toys ‘R’ Us) and because people are dirt-bags – I have this little guy that was ripped off a Water Rescue Spiderman and Friends Helicopter.  The weird part is… it only has 3 points of articulation!  That’s right!  The legs are fused together and don’t move independently of each other!  But this kid friendly Hulk needs to do a little work on his biceps before I take anything he does seriously.  Really, who are you?  Popeye?

Look!  Hulk doing crunches!

Incredible Hulk #161 (1973)

Hulk #161 Beast

Of all the X-Men – I never thought of the Beast as any kind of match for the Hulk.  This issue is the lead into the introduction to Wendigo.  Hulk is in the Canadian wilderness where canadian hunters are searching for prey and find the Hulk – I think they say things like – “The Hulk?  What’s that all a-boot?” – Anyways, Hulk makes quick work of them but Hank McCoy hears a-boot the Hulk being in the area and tries his luck in defeating him.  Entertaining issue to say the least – and now only 4 issues to go!

Hulk #3

I guess no one fell for the April Fool’s post – crap.  Guess I have to be a little more creative next year!  Well, here’s a pic for Hulk #3 due out April 23rd.  What happened to monthly comics?  What happened to March?  GET ON THE BALL JOEY Q!  You are supposed to make sure these books are coming out on time!  Well, should be a pretty entertaining issue.  And more clues to the fact that Doc Samson is the Red Hulk… I mean… who the Red Hulk is?

Incredible Hulk #128 & #131

 131128ironman

I just got these issues in the mail today.  I am awaiting to get issues that I won or ordered through the mail or ebay – when I get them I will have every issue!  I am wiating for 7 more arrive – but today, these beauties came!  Issue #128 has the Avengers, and I hate to say, I am not a huge fan of the cover.  The Hulk looks about as big as Quick Silver, what is up with that?  Giant Man is punching a hole in the ground and that is cool – but the cover seems a bit out of scale.  A better cover is the Iron Man cover.  Trimpe does a classic Iron Man.  It looks great and makes me want to read the issue!  Nice condition too!  I’m excited that I have all of the comics coming – but I don’t count my chickens before they hatch – I will celebrate when every issue is in my hand!

With #128 it was a lot that came with #127 and #176.  I have a few double issues – if anyone who is reading this and is collecting the Hulk themselves are searching for some Hulk issues – just email me at greyfixit@live.com and ask for a list of the doubles I have.  I will let you know what’s available and will give you a really great price.
