Hulk #28 (2010) – The Review

Hulk #28

Alright, as this series progresses I realize more and more issues.  See, one of the biggest issues there is in making the Red Hulk a “hero” sort fo speak is, well, we already HAVE a hero Hulk.  Keeping Red a villain would have been the only way to keep this character interesting.  Well, that and not having Loeb write him in the first place.  I have gone on record saying that the idea of the Red Hulk was an interesting one – but the execution was hugely flawed.  It could have been one of the best chapters in the Hulk series – but instead it is considered a dark period.  Red could have been the next Venom!

MODOK - Looking like he belongs on Tiger Beat

Remember when Venom appeared – he was a foe like no other Spiderman ever faced before.  The whole first saga seriously rocked!  Instead we are left with a series people describe as “tongue in cheek” because they can’t admit that they like reading crap.  Back in the 90’s they tried to turn Venom into a hero – and they were dilluting the charater.  Unfortunately, Marvel doesn’t seem to learn their lesson because they are doing it again.  Venom is best when used as a real threat against Spiderman and then disappears for a while.

Red taking on the Monsters!

Red would be best used in the same regard – but instead Marvel sees a cash cow and begins milking like crazy.  The original series was supposed to last 6 issues – keep that in mind people – 6 FREAKIN’ ISSUES!  They turned it into a 2+ year mystery that no one cared about by the end – and most already knew the reveal anyways.  Bear in mind – they strung people along for so long – that the issue that actually revealed his identity wasn’t even an “event”.  It came and went with people shrugging and feeling underwhelmed.  So what to do?

Rick is not himself... in more ways than one

They continue the series – making Red a hero of sorts – cleaning up his messes and trying to make amends with all of the heroes he beat up.  They even make him an Avenger.  That’s right – he’s an Avenger.  Sound familiar?  It should – we’ve seen this all before – with an impressive almost 50 years of history behind him.  We now have a charater that hollers like a Hulk, walks like a Hulk, Smashes like a Hulk – but we’re supposed to accept him as something more than the Hulk we’ve seen for years.  I am getting so bored of this character.

oh no... ross can't change (Notice the lower case letters? That's to show boredom)

Now Ross can’t change back when he needs to… is it Deja Vu?  Banner has struggled with this problem a few times.  Now Ross is dealing with it and we’re supposed to be, what?  Shocked?  Worried?  Are we supposed to care?  We’re being dealt a Hulk of a different color, that’s exactly the same, it turns out.  That’s not to say Parker is doing a bad job (I actually like his mix of humor and action – he’s actually writing more of a Hulk book – just not the right Hulk), mind you, in fact he’s leaps and bounds better than Loeb – but he’s a writing a character that was stale in his inception.  Hulk and TIHs sell practically the same – not that either is doing spectacualr right now – but the readers are dwindling and you can’t help but wonder is they had just let the Hulk keep his own series and introduced Red, much like they did with Venom, in the regular title, how things may be different/better?  Grade: B- (keep in mind – there’s nothing wrong with the writing – the story is still quite interesting – it’s just the staleness of the character)

Hulkbuster and Gamma Hulk Mini-Mates (2010)

Hulkbuster and Gamma Hulk Minimates
Gamma Hulk in his natural habitat!

I am pretty sure the minimates are my new favorite Marvel line.  They are tiny, adorable and 2 come in a pack so they are never lonely!  It’s the perfect thing ever!  Granted, I was surprised when they matched up the WWH with Mr. Fantastic, I mean, those two aren’t friends!  They will just bicker and agure until the end of time!  It’s just mean to pair these two up!  Same with this match up!  I mean IM designed this suit JUST to beat the Hulk up!

Transparent Hulk! The one we've been waiting for! Wait, what?
This little guy is awesome!

Didn’t we have a Gamma Glow Hulk?  I know we did!  And a better one at that!  This Hulk you can hardly see his tiny little face!  But it is pretty awesome that IM helmet raises to see te regular IM helmet underneath!

Here are the two Gamma Hulks!
Woo Hoo! Helmet Up!

Kotobukiya Green Hulk Statue (2010)

Koto Hulk in the house!
The whole freakin' thing!

This review has been a long time coming!  I am sorry things have been taken so long recently to finally post – but I will catch up soon!  Now this statue certainly has had it’s share of controversy surrounding it.  Beginning with the anatomy of the statue – especially the lower jaw.  The way it sticks out is an eye sore to some – and while I can’t remember the Hulk ever having an underbite – it doesn’t take away from the pretty perfect rendition that Koto has done here of McG’s Hulk!

Does Hulk wear nail polish?

I mean, let’s be honest – McG isn’t known for his accurate anatomy portrayal – he’s known for drawing amazing looking beefed up characters.  It was like he was born to draw the Hulk!  Arguably, he is the reason Loeb’s terrible Hulk series sold so well.  But some of this statue’s critics say the muscles are all wrong – and all I can say is – when I see this statue I see McGuiness.  And that’s a pretty amazing feat to accomplish!

"And your back! It's worse than the front!"

The other complaint – and this one I agree with – is that the paint application isn’t up to par.  There is only one place that I see the paints as a problem – the ripped shirt around his waist.  The paint used was too thin and the purple underneath shows through.  People have said it was meant to look like that – but I can’t believe that they WANTED it to look like crap!  Come on!  But, this is a very easy fix – one that I have yet to do but will in the future!

Get out of the way! Hulk is coming!

I know what is coming next – everyone will want to know where the Red Hulk statue is – if I picked it up – and that is just a silly question!  Of course I didn’t!  I was very close… VERY close though because of the deal my LCS was going to give me – but I still passed.  I wanted to spend my money of things I love to look at – and the Red Hulk just isn’t it!  The green Hulk though – awesome!  I think there is another reason that I am so fond of this statue – and that’s because McG went to Massasoit College – a place right in MA that is right next to my LCS.

Bad Ass - in the house!

So there you have it – this is the review people have asked for – while I agree with some of the detractors sentiments about the flaws in this statue over-all it’s a fantastic representation of one of the best Hulk artists who ever graced the pages of one of the greatest heroes ever conceived!

Have a Hulky New Year!

A Shot of the Hulk room! If you look close you can see some items I have yet to post!

Alright – after the weekend we will be back in business!  I will be ready to post like a mad man!  Trust me when I say I do not have a shortage of things to show off!  So, I am going to try to stick to a posting schedule in the New Year – I figure on Monday and Wednesday I will post items from my collection – Tuesday will be announcements or upcoming items, news and or funny photos – and Thursday will be for reviewing either the most recent comic or an older issue.  Tell me what you guys think – I am looking forward to 2011 – how about you?

The Incredible Hulks #618 & #619 (2010) – The Review

Incredible Hulks #618 - Abomination's back!

There are characters that die in comics – some of the deaths were so meaningful and so perfect that you hope they don’t ruin it by bringing them back… but they always do (Betty comes to mind – so does the Green Goblin).  But then there are deaths that you feel robbed and can’t wait for their inevitable return… and that’s where Abomination’s death falls.

Hulk - making sense
Hulk is on a Roll!

I do wish Marvel would make death mean something again.  At this point a character dies and you just roll your eyes, knowing that said character will return at some point later.  But Pak – as usual – isn’t just bringing Abomination back – he’s tieing it into the big event going on at Marvel!  I admit – I don’t read many other Marvel books… or ANY other Marvel books – other than Red’s series.  And, I only read that because Banner’s part of it… although it is better these days!

Demons on Earth... and that includes Abomination!

Now, Death is banished – making it impossible for people to die.  Not to mention that demons are crawling the Earth!  At least that’s what the Hulk Family finds when they return home.  That and of course the Abomination, ready to strike!  Abomination is looking for Marlo – but no one says a word about her whereabouts.  Abomination takes their silence out in violence – slashing the Hulk’s throat and literally ripping the armor off of A-Bomb’s body!

A-Bomb is taught a lesson!

I have to admit – that last part made me laugh and cringe!  A feat that not many writers, Pak is in the rare company, can make me do.  Strange has asked the Hulk for help – Hulk says he will help, as he always does, but not for Strange.  Hulk is still bitter for being sent into space – and even worse is when Hulk returned, Strange tried to defeat Hulk by channeling ZOM. And at the end of #618 – as Rick tells Hulk where Marlo is – Strange reveals that he is ZOM!

Hoo - Boy! The Hulks might be in trouble!

Marlo had once channeled Death – and she still has a tinge of Death inside of her – which is why Abomination and ZOM are looking for her.  Now that they know where she is they destroy the stone ship and take off to get her.  Hulk transforms back into Banner and has Korg and Skaar collecting enough of the ship to teleport the Hulk family to where Marlo is – meanwhile Rick calls Marlo to see if she’s alright.  Marlo tells Rick that she is alive – but freaking out because dead people are following her!

Hulk, inspiring confidence!

Rick tells her about the tinge of Death inside of her – and she remembers – but oddly, it doesn’t make her feel any better.  The Hulk family arrives and gets ready for Strange and Abomination’s arrival.  They get busy building a place to protect Marlo – but then Marlo has an idea…

Samson is back - should we tell him about the MU figure mess up?

She brings back some friends from the dead starting with Samson.  Jarella, Talbot and Hiroim The Oldstrong of the Warbound also come back – and when Zom and Abomination come back – they are actually put on the rails by the Hulks and their new once deceased allies!  Just when they think they are winning – Abomination gets an idea – seeing all the dead people around gives him an idea to also resurrect Mama Banner… followed closely by Papa Banner… and oddly NO ONE is happy to see him!

A whole team... back from the grave!
Papa Banner... still a jerk

I think Pak has weaved such a great tale here – I can’t wait for the next issue!  I would like some confirmation on Talbot though… what happened exactly?  First he was thought to be an LMD – then Cho said he wasn’t – then Red Hulk ripped his head off proving he was – WTF?  I know we’re dealing with Loeb’s writing – but a little consistency would have been nice!  Let’s see if they deal with this.  Overall though – the issues have been stellar!  Be sure to pick them up! Grade: A

Incredible Hulks #619

Planet Hulk Hero Clix (2010)

Planet Hulk Heroclix

Let me start by letting you know – it was this dusty when I took the freakin’ thing out of the package.  I have dusted it since – but couldn’t even see the dust this bad until I looked at the pics.  But, moving on, I don’t pick up a lot of these Hero Clix.  I picked this up though – not only because it’s a limited piece – but because they have 4 characters from the Planet Hulk series displayed!

Hulk and Meik

You have Hulk of course but also Meik, Korg and Silver Savage.  These are some of the more memorable characters from the storyline.  The Silver Savage fight was one of the best, most brutal fights in the whole arc!  Korg is the Hulk’s most loyal and powerful allies – this is evident because Korg is still in the pages of Hulk to this day!  Meik is, of course, the most despised character as he is the one who betrayed the Hulk and was the one who actually planted the bomb that destroyed Hulk’s kingdom on Sakaar.  Which of course started the events of World War Hulk.

Meik and Silver Savage!

I love how accepted the Planet Hulk storyline has become – even to those who didn’t read the Hulk before.  It really is one of the best stories told in recent years – the effects of which we are still reading today – be that good or bad.

Korg and Hulk

McDonald’s Hulk (2010)

Superhero Squad Hulk

Let me start off by saying that this Hulk is a HUGE improvement over the last one.  But I do have an issue… why couldn’t they cover the back of his arms?  Like I said though – this is one sweet little figure!  There is a small button on the back that makes his arms close in – and incidentally it makes my daughter laugh when it happens!

Now turn!
Other side... note the back of the arms...

I do not eat McDonald’s but I was told that you can buy the figure seperately from having to buy the meal.  I guess that depends on what restaurant you visit though because while one place let me – another McD’s did not.  Thay said I HAD to buy the Kid’s Meal in order to get the toy.  Whatever Ronald!  You’re just a clown with a purple blob as a best friend!

The 2 McDonald's Hulk toys

Marvel Universe’s Doc Samson (2010)

MU's Doc Samson

Alright – here is the other new release from MU.  I have this week of posts planned out, and yes, I will make sure I post the review for the new Hulks issue by the end of this week, but I want to make sure to show off the new MU figures first.  Seeing as the new wave is just hitting the shelves and wave 11 hardly made an appearance these figures are still a novelty to see.

There's the guy who almost stole Betty away!
SAMPSON!?!? WTF?

The best thing about the Samson figure?  The little base that the figure comes with says “Sampson”.  That’s right – they spelled the name of their own character wrong!  And while we’re on the subject of these bases – WTF?  The figures now come with just bases?  I know the cards/SHEILD file was cheesy – but at least it was something!  And now that they are trying to raise the prices on these figures – the absence of the sparingly simple extras is insulting!

One of these are for Steve Yarish - One of them is mine!

If Marvel expects fans to pay this much for these figures – we should get something worth our money – the WWH is an outstanding figure – but even  I  have a hard time justifying a $10 price tag for it.  This figure is mediocre at best.  But good luck to all who wants one!

Marvel Universe’ World War Hulk (2010)

MU World War Hulk
Closer Look in the package!

I showed off my Thanos and Juggy yesterday – now let’s bet back to Hulk!  Here is the latest wave to hit the shelves that include WWH here and Samson – who I will be posting tomorrow – and wait till you see THAT figure!  WWHulk is an amazing figure though – with plenty of accessories!  Marvel Hulk figures have come and gone – and usually with some issue…

The bounty so far... +1

To name a few – the original ML Hulk was a cool sculpt but didn’t have a fist – Hulk figures should always have a fist!  Planet Hulk’s face was an abomination!  The first MU Hulk’s paint job could have been way better – but let’s not forget there have been some beauties as well!  ML Face-Off Hulk – both sculpts were amazing – MU Secret Wars Hulk is also outstanding!  And I think this figure will also be included in one of the best!

The Weapons Abound!
Hulk and the Weapons
The WWH all together!

The face sculpt is perfect!  The paint application is outstanding!  The accessories are even detailed with marks on the weapons and the textures on the loin cloth and skin!  One of the issues with the Planet Hulk figure was that the arm – that was originally painted silver – then green – was never really sculpted to be an arm covered in armor.  But this is a totally different story!  This figure really captures everything so perfectly!  As of right now I have picked up 4 figures, including one that my Mother has wrapped and put under our tree… even though I bought it myself.

Would you mess with a huge Green Guy armed to the teeth?
Oh IM - When will you learn? You don't stand a chance!

Let’s Talk About the MU Line!

Thanos - w/ Infinity Gauntlet

This line of figures has started to impress me;  even with the smaller size of these figures the detail on them are outstanding!  I thought I’d show some of my nin-Hulk figures.  Wave 11 has proven to be extremely scarce around these parts – I was lucky enough to come across a Thanos and Constrictor in a Toys R Us Express – even better they were having a sale on them!  While I have only seen these figures just once – I did get REAL lucky with Wave 12 – which is great because that’s the wave that includes WWH and Samson – both of those reviews will be coming up this week.

I wonder if he's Grimace's cousin?

I did want to discuss something – and would like to know what you guys think as well.  Recent trips to Target has shown that the $6.99 or even $7.99 price tag are now being replaced again with $8.99.  $9 for a 3″ figure?  Really Marvel?  Really?!?!?  Is this what happens when they are bought out by Disney?  I have yet to pay that price – I am lucky enough to find Target’s that have not raised the prices yet.  In fact, so far I have only had to pay the $6.99 price!  A great guy named Ted from SF snagged me a Samson at Walmart where the inflated prices were already in effect – but after finding some in Braintree later that day I was able to return the expensive one.

Juggy! One big mutha!

I know we’re talking about $2 – but that seems like a world of difference when it comes to these figures.  What are you guys out there thinking?  Who has seen these price increases?  How do you feel about them?  Who is willing to pay them?  Who is ready to boycott?!?

Jugs and Hulk have fought many times - and it's one of the best and most lively debates ever! Can the Hulk stop the Juggernaut?

Tom’s Collection – Day 4

Let’s finish this week off right – and with some beautiful pieces of original art!  I am looking for a Larsen Hulk piece myself – but this one is just out standing:

Defenders Cover

Defenders 3 Cover: When Kurt Busiek and Erik Larsen relaunched the defenders in 2000, I bought it mainly because I love Larsen’s Hulk. Much to my surprise the book, unlike everything else on the stands, was pure fun and often hilarious! The wacky tone was such a breath of fresh air that I knew it destined for failure. One thing I’ve learned in all my years in comics: Comic fans don’t like funny. But I do, and I love Larsen’s loose, energetic drawing style. The Defender’s logo was an add-on since Larsen signed the cover in blue ball-point pen right across the logo area. Lesson learned, if the artist offers to sign his piece, either decline or have it signed on the back

Next up – some more awesome Trimpe!

Hulk Battle Page!
Hulk 170 pg 6: It’s not often you find the page that is clearly the best page in a particular issue but, that’s the case with this one. This page from Hulk #170, is without question the best page in the book. Even better then the splash, which features only Banner and Betty. Great Hulk vs. giant monster action, by Trimpe and Abel (of course) and the first superhero comic I ever saw that showed some blood. I love this page!

And now – here’s a quick story of my own… on my honeymoon my wife and I went to art auctions.  There was this really great Top Cat animation cel that I wanted so bad!  I bid as soon as it came up – but another woman bid higher.  I was surprised and a little angry.  So, the auction started off at $60 and shot up to $220 – when I let the other woman have it.  I wasn’t looking to pay that much anyways so I’m glad I at least drove the price up on her anyways… and the reason for that story?  It’s right here – Tom’s last original art piece to show off and it’s a doozy!

Top Cat Illustration
Top Cat book Illustration: And now for something completely different. I love painted cartoon character art, but it’s hard as hell to find. I tracked this one down in 2002 after searching for almost three years and it was well worth the effort. It’s just a gorgeous piece. The colors are lush the piece really pops in person. I love the way he painted the fence in the foreground, just perfect. I’ve not yet located the source of this piece; Little Golden Books I assume, so unfortunately I can’t credit that artist

Well, this was fun – I love looking at other’s collections – and I know you guys do to – that’s why you come to this blog!  Next week I will be posting some of the new Hulk action figures that have been coming out recently – so stop on by!

Tom’s Collection – Day 3

I have the 1979 Hulk calendar – that’s why seeing this selection from Tom’s collection is that much more amazing!  Check it out:

Buscema Hulk

John Buscema Hulk Calender Art: 1979 was a great year to be a Hulk fan. The success of the TV show spawned a ton Hulk merchandise and Marvel, which did a calender each year, dedicated the whole thing to Ol’ Greenskin that year. I got it for Christmas of ’78 and just loved it. There were two pieces in it that really stuck with me, one by John Byrne/Terry Austin and the other by John Buscema/Joseph Rubinstein. Both remained on my list of works to track down for years, but after little luck they dropped completely off my radar. Then one day I just stumbled upon the Busceme piece on a dealers web-site and three days later I owned it. I love John Buscema’s art and to have a Hulk piece by him (oversized no less) is a real treasure. Plus, whether intended or not, this one always seemed like an homage to Frank Frazetta’s Destroyer (my favorite Frazetta painting).

And Like I’ve shown – Tom has some other pieces other than the Hulk – here is another stunner!  With sort of a depressing story… but still outstanding!

Byrne X-Men

X-Men #121 pg 4 : I love Byrne and Austin’s X-men run. It’s one of those planets aligning moments where two artists both hitting their stride, are paired together and create comic book magic. Byrne hasn’t produced any work close to this since and Austin reinvented inking standards with the quality he brought to each book. It’s a shame the two didn’t stay together longer. This page was a bitter-sweet purchase for me. I was at a con and had a much better page in my hand, but when the dealer saw how little sale resistance I offered at his inflated price, he pulled it from my hand and told me he forgot, that it was on hold for someone else. So, even though I like this page, it still seems like second best.
